Cone area never change, this is the Subwooffer cone size (more cone area mean more air moved by the speaker = more output whit the same power).

First you should look at the size of box you need to make your sub sound good. Personnally i would go scealed because its easier to get good sound and is take less space.

See I dont know much about car Audio...

In Pro Audio Ive only worked with 15s and 18s

This is our Small System

But I think I might go with the 12s to save room!

Be aware that bass doesnt sound the same in a car than in a big room or outdoor. There is a big gain in the low frequancy because of the car acoustic.

Personnally, 2x10" or 1x12" or 1x15" whit around 1000w rms of amp is enought for any SQ/SQL oriented setup. Getting more is only "headroom" because it cannot be integrated easily whit the front-stage (maybe not if you got 8" mid-bass in the doors)....

2 cents from a guy that once had 2x12" and 2000w and now as acouphenes...

you bring up a good point. My suggestion for two 12"s was due to the fact that the trunk is totally sealed off from the cabin of the car. and the dual 10's weren't an option. I'd probably still recommend two 12's for the added headroom. I think that subs are very over rated (well the time choosing a sub... it's only taking care of a small portion of the audio spectrum) and i'm glad that he has spent the majority of his time figuring out mids/highs
