Custom Subwoofer Box - help appreciated

Hello,

I am looking to build a custom (well, 2) box for my `97 Crown Vic. I have 2 12" subwoofers, and instead of the traditional double box, I'd like to make 1 box for each subwoofer that fits into the side of the trunk:

I did the measurements yesterday, and the subwoofer has plenty of space. There is something like 4" clearance for depth, width and height. I'll post the exact measurements later.

So, here are some questions:
  1. Should I use the side of the trunk as part of the box?
  2. Is this a good idea?
  3. What material? Fiberboard?
  4. Any tips on taking measurements, etc? I've never done this before.
  5. Should I build the box to "fit in there" or should I build the box to connect to the metal panels, and use the rest of the trunk as part of the box?

Thanks!

There are a few ways to go about this.
You can take out a measuring tape and make a whole lot of measurements and use math to find angles, etc and build it out of MDF (found at home depot)
You can also just make a fiberglass box that fits the contour exactly, and make the front face of the box out of MDF. There are plenty of tutorials on how to do this. Just and you will find.

It all depends on what your comfort level is with wanting to learn new things and trying new techniques (and how much you want to spend; a fiberglass box will cost more in material than a box made of MDF)
