Carpc sound to HU...5.1 or 2/4 speakers?

I currently have a carpc system built on a ASRock 775i65G motherboard and am using the onboard sound that feeds into my Panasonic CQ-C9801U headuinit. I think the system sounds really good but my buddy says it would sound even better if I was to use the 5.1 digital sound from my board. Currently, I am only using the 2 speaker setup.

My question is this, do you think he is right? And if so, what would be the best way to hook it up? Right now, I have a single line sound connection coming out of the baord that splits into the left/right rca connections of the headunit. If I was to turn on the 5.1 digital on board, that would mean 3 connections coming out of the board (front/rear/sub)...how would you feed that into the left/right rca connections on the headunit?

As always, thanks in advance to all who respond.

you can't you have run (front/rear) directly into the amp, and middle/sub into mono amp or however your amps are set up.

it would sound 300 times better if you bypass the headunit

You need dedicated amplifiers for each output. You can't connect it 5.1 the way you are thinking. I won't go into a lot of details but is your music recorded in 5.1? Are your speakers in optimal locations for surround sound?

Just some things to think about. To say it will sound better in 5.1 vs stereo is not true, there is no correct answer to that question.

Thanks, that sounds logical.

I did forget to mention that the HU feeds the front/rear speakers and the HU sub out goes to a mono amp that feeds my 2 10" subs so the mono amp is the only amp I have.

Thanks again

Should you all depends on if you watch movies with 5.1 in the car. If its mostly MP3 WMA basically music then I wouldn't bother. Music generally doesn't have the channels in it anyway so any 5.1 you get from it is fake. Sometimes it works sometimes it sounds terrible it all comes down to the drivers you have and what you use to play them with.

remember speakers are blocked by seats, so you won't get good spatial effects. passengers in the back seats would only hear rear effects. Stereo is the best way to go in a car.
