Man, i hate to do it, but i think im gonna buy a HU
isnt the reason i did this carputer was to get rid of the HU? now that im planning on buying one, im curious to see what people think of this idea. Blasphemy? maybe...
It's just that i want the radio feature, and I want instant boot up times when i have short trips. I thought I could handle the bootup times on the mac! sometimes, i dont feel like having a screen and just want music to play without selecting anything, without having to push buttons to get to it and having it fast. Yeah the carputer is great when i take a trip to work, nav, mp3s, Hondata, whatever, but im missing the radio....

Different answer for everyone. I kept my HU for every install.

Not in my view, depends on what you want out of your set up.
You need to be happy with the plan, cost and results.... no one else.

Well I turn on the car, it goes "doo-deh-la-doo" and within a second the music is playing behind the welcome screen. I dont have to login to get my music to play and shuffle because it is already playing. Standby is faster than my old HU.
As for getting a HU, I dont see why not. I wouldnt ever but that is just me. If you just want radio why not get the HQCT? The HQCT is less than any respectable HU. And if it doesnt work on a mac, then dont use OSX. Who gives a hoot what OS you are using. Use the fastest and most supported OS. Usually XP that can be nlited. If you have an intel mac, put on an nlite copy of XP and RR, and watch the magic happen.

you could always do standby. or set you startup controller to a longer shutdown time for short trips. for me on short trips i just leave the remote start and go inside do what i have to do and then come back, put key in and go. computer still running

yeah for short trips i need your fast setup Toasteroven. i work on an AF base and when they need me i drive my car across base (3 miles). im looking into an Alpine 9885 deck and im going to put that into the roof of my glovebox, along with the my mac mini. thinking side by side. One of the things are, i dont wanna look at the darn HU, I just want it to do the audio duties.

No need to tear up your glove box just for a HU. Check out the Visteon Zoom HDZ300 HD Radio reciever, it has a very small display that mounts easily to any dash, looks like just enough space below your screen for one. Its computer controlable, and you can instantly switch between the CarPC and the external controller with one of these. The tiny remote it comes with is pretty cool too.

I was just trying to help. Put the dam thing in your glovebox then and enjoy the control nightmare that will result. LOL
I was not even done editing my post before your rude little response, and to tell you the truth, I don't think you have a clue as to what you are doing. A HU mounted in a glove box is one of the most idiotic ideas I have heard yet. If you cant do something right, maybe you should just give up before you turn a perfectly good car into a POS?

The real problem is you were stupid enough to use a MAC as a carpc when pretty much all of the software (including drivers for much of the hardware) is designed for windows.
That does not leave many options for adding AM/FM hardware the right way other than something like the device I suggested. LOL
