Is my Amp Working?

Hi Guys

Got my CarPc setup installed and all seems well, however when i connect it up to my amp, i get no sound. i've checked all connections and am taking the output from the on board sound card to the amp with a mini jack/RCA lead. i asked previously if this would work and opinion was it would. So with no sound coming out i am suspecting the Amp, it was a second hand one off ebay, so i'm not 100% sure that it works.

Is there a way to check the amp is working, is there anything i can check with a multimeter?

Thanks

Rich

You can check if there is power on your amp. Check for +12V on the possitive connection and the remote connection of the amp. On both of them should be 12V when the amp is on.

You van try connecting an iPod or simple walkman to the amp. If you got sound now there is probably something wrong with the sound output on the PC.

You can also try to connect a pair of headphones to the PC and see if you get any sound coming from there this way. If you got sound now the problem probably is the amp or the cable using to connect the PC and the amp.

This way you should be able to figure out where the problem is.

Something worth pointing out in what Bimmerstyle said - make sure if there is a remote connection point on the amp, that it gets 12V. The amp won't turn on without that. Usually aftermarket head units have such a wire. Assuming you have no way of externally generating the remote, it's OK to just jumper a wire over from the main power lead to test it out.
