Change sound card?

I am currently rebuilding my system and am considering a new sound card but am having trouble deciding if there is really anything better than what I am using? I am happy with the setup but would entertain something if it were better sound quality.

I am currently running a GametheaterXP which is a pci slot card with an external rack. It does dolby digital 5.1, which I am happy with. Don't have the desire or need to go to 6.1or 7.1. Anyway, the rack has spdif, digital, and coaxial outs. I am using the coaxial outs right now and am running them to my amps for the 5.1 speaker setup.

Any thoughts on a better sound quality card that would be this easy to use/setup?

There are a number of options out there.

The sound quality of your system doesn't end at your sound card...it depends on everything.

There's a thread in the Car Audio FAQ section that lists all of the various external sounds cards avaliable. There are a ton of PCI cards so there hasn't been a thread made for them for obvious reasons.

Right. I just thought I might have been talking to myself for a minute.

I have been reading a lot and did see/read that thread a while ago. It was very helpful actually. I think I am giong to stick with the one I have. I haven't seen or heard/read of anything better on here. I was thinking of going total SQ but that would require lots of other add on parts and stuff to tune/screw with. Not that into it anymore and I have really great sound now. Might look into some other things in the future for better sound control.

Believe me, there are better cards out there...however, you have to ask yourself if that's where you want to focus your efforts. Instead you can tune what you have now and work on software tweaks to get a more true sound (Bit-Perfect...).

Yes that is what I am thinking of doing. Keeping what I have and just doing some software tweeks to get it to be a little bit better.

Any suggestions on some software to look into??

I was running win98 and windows media player and was happy with it but might switch it to winXP.....was having trouble getting XP to run everything right though.

There are a number of threads on here where we've discussed software tuning options and where I've discussed bit-perfect. Searching for these threads will yield a good deal of additional information that would be critical to your understanding of this area of the CarPC.

Sounds great will search/read those as well. Going to be spring before I get going on the new PC so I have time to read and do a little research.

Thanks Red
