Hidden radio antenna?
Just trying to get a feel for what people do to hide thier radio antennas.. Surely im not the only one looking for a clean setup...
Im thinking about getting this, because I hate the stock antenna location and want to shave it. What do you guys think?
Quote:
If you have had a bad experience in the past with hidden antenna's, so have we, and that's why we designed a universal hidden FM antenna that works! For a clean look on your Rod, Custom or Cruiser . Mount in any vehicle, Boat, RV or Motorcycle. The Tune Trapper antenna was designed to be hidden. Mount anywhere, in any position, in steel or fiberglass. Most vertical whip antennas are a 1/4 wave ground plane. The TT is a full 1/2 wave helical dipole, wound with several feet of wire and requires no ground. Each TT is hand tuned to resonance with special instruments. We use 95% braided sheild cable for virtual elimination of EMI electrical noise caused by engines, fans, wipers, etc. Beware of mini amplified antennas that make big claims. The TT antenna will not cause radio overload problems associated with amplified antenna's. These hand tuned USA made antenna's require no power. Your radio has all the preamp it needs built in, it's just looking for a properly tuned antenna to make it rock. Every TT is tested before being packaged. We guarantee it will perform.
It has a lifetime guarantee and looks pretty solid. Only $40 too..

Some cars have antena's right on a window, looks almost like a defroster, and get great reception. If this dosn't work out you could always look if they sell those to aftermarket.

In glass antenna's are normally an amplified type of antenna and don't work very well without a stock head unit (which usually contains the amplifier.
The "antenna" listed above is the type that usually picks up FM only and is pretty much useless for AM. Every place I checked clearly stated that type of antenna was not able to receive am. No matter what they say, those antenna's performance is spotty at best.
Here is what I have on order:
Dakota Digital amplified antenna
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/1193999-post522.html
Why is this better?
Well, it's a self amplified antenna that requires 12v power. Any antenna less than the stock 31" mast antenna is either going to perform poorly or require an amplifier in the system somewhere.
street rods have been using these for years (to avoid antenna's) with good reviews, and now motorcycles are too (harley dressers).
Dakoa digital is also a pretty reputable company..........
As listed in the above mentioned thread, I'll be posting on it's performance once it arrives.....
Cheers

Ive used that exact antenna @ a booth for CES. It seemed to grab signal just fine from where we were. (there was tons of radio interference inside the building)

So, are you refering to the dakota digital antenna or the wire antenna?

yep.. the little black box... the one i used was from crutchfield or parts express though. im not sure what brand it was. but it looks similar to the dakota one.
the company used the antenna on a prototype radio that was able to get a good enough signal for sound recognition to ID the song that was playing (it was hooked up to the internet) and was even able to download a digital copy of the song if you wished.
