Sub and Amp question?

Hello i own a Directed D1200 amplifier i burned out my two subs i owned and i have this one laying around its a Digital Audio 12" dual voice coil 1000 watt max subwoofer with the option of running it at 2,4,& 8 Ohm operation can this amp handle this sub with out running hot and if so how do i wire this thing im used to just a positive and negative this thing has positive and negative with 4 wire hook ups on each side. Thanks for your help.

What is the specifications of the amp? RMS wattage at what input impedance?
What is the specifications of the sub? RMS wattage and what is the impedance of each coil?

I dont think that your sub is capable of running 2, 4, or 8 ohms. most likely 2 or 8 ohms.

the sub is cappable of this i wouldnt have posted it other wise its an old brand of digital audio the back is a little worn so all i can read is the 1000watt but i do remeber the odd ohms it has two positives and two negatives on each side totalling 4 positives and negatives.

Aye, really sucks when you're asking for help, then being a jerk off with a helpful reply, and on top of that having no idea what you're talking about.

I'm sorry, I don't normally get combative on the forums, but this just irks me.

First off, your sub is NOT capable of running 2, 4, or 8ohms. This is a physical impossibility. Secondly, if the sub does indeed have 4 positives and 4 negatives, it's not a dual voice coil subwoofer. It's a quad voice coil subwoofer. Either that, or it is a dual voice coil woofer that just has split inputs for easier wiring. This could be the case. Either way, it doesn't matter. You need to find out exactly what it is before any one can give you any sound advice on how to wire it.

Here's the problem with your 2, 4, or 8ohm wiring.

If it's dual 4ohm, you can only run it at 2ohms (bridged, or parallel) or 8ohms (series).

If it's dual 2ohm, you can only run it at 1ohm (parallel) or 4ohms (series).

That's it. There's no subwoofer (that I'm aware of) that can bypass ohms law. It's simple scientific fact and there's no way around it.

Never knew lower end companys made quad voice coil woofers. Please post a pic. Lets just plug it into the wall free air, that'll be fun

ehm hardcorejuggalo..... PT and digital are 2 different companies...., so the subs aren't in any way the same

@ronjon.... Not totally correct, since besides parrallel or series, you could also wire in stereo.... Which isn't recommended, but still, it's possible. so if it is actually a DVC 4Ohm sub, yes, it could run in 2,4 or 8 Ohm

@hardcorejuggalo: it isn't recommended to wire the sub in stereo since alighning the input on both VQ's without measuring the output of the 2 channels will result in crappy sound. And besides that, with your current amp it isn't possible anyways, since it's a monoblock. So in that case, yes, you can only run the sub at 2 or 8 Ohms

Two 4 ohm voice coils can ONLY be wired as follows:

If you are trying to get him to put each voice coil on a different channel to get "stereo" it will sound like a floppy fart..so I do not really see that as an option. And, as you said he has a mono amp..he doesn't even have two channels.

I cannot possibly see how you are the one who gets a "thanks" from the original poster because your input does not help the issue at hand one bit.

If you only have one sub, then your only possible ohm load would be 2 ohms.

I'm going to guess it is one of the low end ones. Maybe a DA2012.

It has dual 4ohm voice coils and 400 watts RMS.

So you would wire your sub to 2 ohms and match up the 400 watts RMS from your amp to your sub.

See the diagram above on how to wire it that way.

@ arcanedreams..... I've already earned my credits on this forum, so I guess I know what I'm talking about. I never said it'd sound good giving each VQ its own channel. I only said it was possible. I also said that, in that case he could only do so by aligning output on both channels, which cane only be done by a scope or DMM. I've provided the TS with some info, and that's why I get the thank you, as opposed to some other people who are making a joke out of it. If you want to know my experience with car-audio, maybe you should do a search, because I'm pretty sure it's far more than most of the guys here, along with a few respectable members like redGTIvr6, scott-fx, durwood, turbocad6..... You, my friend still have to earn those credits, so don't come to me telling me I don't know a thing about it.

Oh..... And again YOU showed you don't know ***** what you're talking about. If it's a DVC 4Ohm sub, he could also wire it in 8Ohm. An amp tha puts out xxx watts at 4Ohm is also able to play at 8Ohm... Given it will be with a lesser output. But since you come off as being a know-all, you should know watts don't matter, but efficiency does.

2. He cannot wire it in 4 ohms with the amp he has; Impossible.

3. An 8 ohm load would be retarded. He would be under powering his subs by a lot.

4. Efficiency does matter. However, if he gives the highest efficient sub in the world a fraction of its nominal power it wouldn't sound as loud as it could.

5. The only option he should really consider is what I had suggested. A 2 ohm load.

6 I have "earned my credits" in college...not on a forum.
