Question USB Device Not Recognized

Hello All,

This is my first post so please be gentle on me.

I recently bought the Kenwood DNX5120 however I'm having issues with the USB capabilities. Unfortunately the USB device is not recognized upon starting the car. I must manually unplug the device and reconnect it.

This is a major pain as I have the device stored and hidden underneath my center console. I've provided links to the specification page of each device to assist.

Why is the drive not recognized when starting the car?

Thank you.

I had the same problem with the WDC160GIG hd.

I fixed the issue by using a shorter USB cable.

Even for my desktop when the cable is longer than a foot the computer does not recognize the device.

Question

Thank you for the reply.

So I've identified that it is definitely a power issue. Like you I switched to a 1' ft USB cable and the drive was recognized almost immediately. However when I switch back to the 6' ft cable nothing happens. I even went and bought a gold plated USB cable thinking it would increase the power, but that failed miserably.

Does anyone know of a small/compact power source for an external drive? I want it to be as discrete as possible without using the cigarette lighters.

Thank you,

-ATX350

I haven't tried this myself, however, i've read on the forum that you can find an external powered USB hub and power it with your 5v rail from your power supply. By adding an usb extension cord and applying the hub at the end-- once it is powered by the 5v rail each of the ports on the hub will individually provide full power(500mA ea. i believe).

Which PSU are you using?
