MP3 Player USB output to audio

Hi there.

I've done a search for this, here and all over the internet, but haven't had much luck.

At the moment, my ICE consists of a 3.5mm jack going into an amp in the boot with 4 speakers attached, no head unit. This i usually plug into my mp3 player.

I'd like to upgrade this to a usb cable. Then i could use my mp3, or my phone or someone else's device. the USB cable could also provide a charging facitility.

Is there some sort of USB to audio converter?

My only solution i can think of is, is to stick a head unit (with USB port) in the boot with the amp and feed a USB extension cable out to the dash, but that sounds a bit poo?

thanks

Jon.

USB is a very complicated protocol and you need a USB host to initiate these sort of communications. Your best bet would be to get that head unit or carputer *cough*.

There may by some crazy chance be a USB to audio connector, except if you can't find it so far, it probably doesn't exist. If one did exist, it would not work for both your phone and your MP3 player in most cases. There may be some sort of device that accepts any generic "Mass Storage Device" USB input and plays songs, but it would probably be expensive or not work properly.

cheers Colin,

yeah, i was thinking that might be the case. I've still be scouring the web.

came across this:

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/harm...ay-p-6541.html

v. nice, but whaaaay more than i intended on paying, and far too fancy for my rusty old mini.

I'll keep on looking, see whats options i have, but looks like the hidden head unit is the cheapest option.

ta.
