...or maybe even do a 2-channel external loopback design, if the soundcard permits this.
It would have to be analog output...
This would probably be the only way to do a multi-channel setup, especially if it was an active, multi-channel setup.
Seeing as my setup uses 2 sound cards and active crossovers (9 channels with sub), I might run digital S/PDIF output to an external DAC, then 2-channel analog to the Level Pilot knob, then 2 channel out to my Xonar Line-In's, then from there, thru AudioMulch and finally to the analog output stage to the amps...
Or if Line-In can't pass-off the audio to AudioMulch, then an analog to digital convertor, then to S/PDIF IN on the sound cards...
Phew!

I'm using 2 CL-RLC , one for my active tweeters and one for my woofer...check my sig for schematics and more details...
I may buy one more for master volume control, that way i can bypass windows mixer (mangler)...
Oh, it also is a line driver, so it ups your preout voltage....

So basically your using the CL-RLC's for level matching your tweets and mids?
You maybe by-passing kmixer by using a CL-RLC for your master volume, but the CL-RLC is still digitally altering the signal to control the volume...
Basically putting you right back where you started.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

Not sure of the internal workings of the cl-rlc, but I believe it works like a small powered pre-amp. It is powered off the car battery.
It takes the input signal, amplifies it (line drives it?), and sends it along to the output jacks. The knob controls the amount the signal that gets amped. One thing for sure, the knob is not a pot , no audio signal is being sent to it. What and how the knob varies how much the signal gets modified, I have no idea. I doubt the signal gets digitized , volume adjusted, and then converted back to analog.
If anyone has cracked one open or has any idea of the inner workings of these units, please share..

You all have lost me now, I do plan on putting in things like steering wheel controls so should I just stick to a software controlled device to avoid confusions??

either if the 2 linked items should work fine for external volume knob...

wungun and pc pete kind of migrated into a(very interesting) discussion about the best way to control the volume with out introducing distortion into the system-- currently, the jl knob looks like the best, but there is very limited knowledge on how this vol. knob makes the sound louder/quieter, so it is tough to know until someone that knows what their looking at, pulls one apart...

I'm still suspicious of the JL unit...I'm convinced it's digital.
One way to find out is to feed it a digital input, S/PDIF for example. If it's analog, then it'll just decrease the digital signal, which won't effect volume at all...just weaken the signal.
There is also the post-amp volume knobs which I alluded to; the ones you mount in your house to control room volume...
If they can accept, say 8 inputs and outputs, then I'd be set! Keeping in mind, of course, the power limitations of the knob...

the biggest issue with the house volume controls is that they are still passive units, and are very likly affecting the sound even more, and power is really limited by the traces on the circuit boards, whereas it is easier to manipulate the low level side while still maintaining signal quality. (maybe a bad example, but how many high quality eq's have you seen that take speaker level inputs?)
I sent a email to jl asking for more details about how the cl-rlc modifies the signal, i'll post a reply as soon as i get one-- their contact page says that it will take at least 2 days to get a reply.

The JL cl-rlc unit is just a knob controlling a small 2" x1 " unit , not the JL cleansweep system...there is no digital input....
They take analog in , and give back analog out....they need car power and remote to operate...I assume there is a small preamp that the knob controls...

I know there is no digital input....I was just curious to see what would happen if you sent is a RCA digital input.

jl's respone to the type of processing done by the unit:
[quote]All signal modification is done in the analog realm, there’s no conversion of the signal.[/quote
pc pete for the win!
so it is a remotely adjustable preamp...

Good job soundman on prying, and good on jl as well for a timely response...
I use my knobs ( :-) ) more than anything else, it's like every song needs a little bass and treble adjustment...being able to do it instantly without fidling with anything is a major must for me....

Well, now we know!!
Isn't having 2 knobs for your mids and tweets kinda redundant? Couldn't you just get away with using a single controller on your tweets, for example, and use your master volume to adjust everything else?
Or is this to adjust your mids/tweets seperate from your subs as well?
