now i just need to figure out the best way to control 3 stereo lines, both independantly, and as a master volume (will be running a full active setup, so I need control over each set of speakers).
right now the only way i can figure to do this would be to use 6 of the jl units, 3 of them coupled togather for master volume, and the another 3 for idependant adjustment... any other ideas?

Isn't having 2 knobs for your mids and tweets kinda redundant? Couldn't you just get away with using a single controller on your tweets, for example, and use your master volume to adjust everything else?
Or is this to adjust your mids/tweets seperate from your subs as well?
I use one for tweets, and one for sub. The mids don't have one, I use master volume for that, and adjust tweets and sub to match...

I'm in a similar situation...
I'm running active 2-way's to 4 corners of my car...there is just no easy way to control the output with a 2-channel volume control.
I imagine a 2-channel, S/PDIF output going to a DAC (or a 2-channel analog output from a seperate soundcard?), from the DAC to the volume control, then back to the Line-In of the sound card, DSP, then analog output from the sound card jacks to the amps...

Would it be possible to use a stepped attenuator on the sound card output? I've done this in home audio setups but, I don't know how the fidelity would fare with the decrease in line voltage at lower volumes.

i beleive that this idea is a very similar to both ideas that were discussed in this topic--using either the jl unit, or using a audio distrobution volume control after the amps.
after thinking about it for a while, i really think that the jl unit is the best peice to use overall-- simply becasue it has a 5volt preamp, and a volume control.
i am not very familiar with stepped attenuators, but like you said, without a preamp, there is not very much voltage behind sound card outputs, so for any other solution to work, you would need a preamp, and then the volume control, which will get you up to the same price as the jl unit (roughly $50 each-depending on purchasing location)

If the JL unit is only 50 dollars, I'd go with that. Something simple like a 46 position stereo stepped attenuator with quality resistors can run 200 dollars. Those of us with active crossovers and multi way stages would need many times more complex units that would run well into the thousand dollar area.

for one, i wouldn't mind the $50 price tag, but i need 3-6, depending on how i decide i want to set it up(one vol control-need 3-i have a 3way active setup, and/or independant vol control for each speaker pair-would need another 3), and $50 adds up pretty quickly (my wallet checked into therapy after the original carputer build). although i really havent seen anything that compares, so, it might be one of the only active setup options under $100...
