How deep are most DIN slots?

I know the height and width are standardized, but how much room is really back there?

I also know that this will vary by vehicle. So, specifically how much room is behind the dash in a Mk4 VW Golf? I measured an extra single DIN cubby I had laying around at about 7" deep, so I know its at least that much, but does anyone know off hand if any more substantial room available?

6-3/4" depth; Size code E
Front speakers
Front Door: 6-3/4" factory speaker note
Far rear speakers
Mid Panel: 6-3/4"
