'99 Jeep Grand Cherokee Infinity Amplifier

I have the Upgraded Infinity sound in my jeep, and I am working on my Carputer.. My question is, I would like to keep the sound levels about the same as they are right now, am I going to have to replace my amp?

i have a standard cherokee that had the infinity system ... probably the same amp as yours ... what i found was that it wasn't a very powerful amplifier ... as the head unit already acts as a preamp and so the stock amp just gives the signal a little extra boost and i think it also acts as the crossover for the stock tweeters.

Anyway ... it's worth a try. I ditched the amp because i didn't think it'd be powerfull enough, but i barely have to turn the gain on my amps up at all. Dunno if my amps are really good or the signal from my extigy is really hot.

Either way, if you can interface with it, give it a try ... you can always change later.

I bought an aftermarket radio harness for the Grand Cherokee and spliced my existing speaker wires into that. I then used a low-power amp with RCA inputs as the "input" for the stock amp. diagram:

CARPUTER --> 100W AMP W/ RCA INPUT --> AFTERMARKET WIRING HARNESS --> STOCK JEEP HEADUNIT CONNECTOR --> STOCK JEEP AMP --> 10-SPEAKER INFINITY SYSTEM

People say they worry about distortion with 2 amps, but the stock setup already includes 2 amplification sources as it is. For more info check out:

Hi Everyone~

I am new, but am having a weird prob. I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the Infinity Golt Sound system in it. Yesterday, I got in to drive away, turned on the radio, it lighted up...But No Sound? I have checked all the fuses and they are OK. I did get (only once) an error code on the radio that read out as "dr....1" and have no idea what that means? I have tried tapes and cd's and still no sound? Any advise would be appreciated?

does anyone know what the stock infinity amp put out? i'm trying to decide if the Infinity Kappa 62.7 6-1/2" speakers can get by with that amp. the watt range is 2-75...

When I first saw your post I thought one of my old posts had been dug up.

first of all, the amp has high level inputs and isn't very desirable to use with equipment with line level outputs (most any sound card). You could do the double amp setup as someone above mentioned, but your causing a ton of distortion. Just because thats the way the factory system is, doesn't mean its optimal, as you can tell after doing a proper upgrade.

If you plan to keep the head unit and use one of the many line-in adapter kits out there, the line level outputs of your carpc will be optimal. Keep in mind however that the factory unit is pretty crappy; I upgraded my amp and speakers to infinity 5 channel and infinity reference speakers and the sound quality increase was drastic. After testing my carpc (actually a laptop) connected directly to my amp I realized just how much I am still missing.

If you do replace the amp but keep the head unit, make sure to get a line level converter to bring the preamped stereo outputs back down to line levels to feed the amp.

The stock amp has high level inputs? You wouldn't happen to know what the voltage input is would you? The last 20 grand cherokees I've put a head unit worked fine off high level inputs from an aftermarket deck. So I'm assuming that's why the low level signal from the pre-amps wouldn't create a desired sound, especially when the signal is manipulated on the outputs to the speakers.

That hundred-watt amp is overkill, tho...I'd guess (and maybe I'm wrong) you'd be much better off with a quality line driver to pick the voltage up from your computer's output....
