Question Help a newbie decide

I am about to buy my sound system and am wondering which is tha best brand to go for for a decent system under/around $450 (if possible). I have heard mixed reviews about all the brands and am not sure which to go with. I am thinking of a JBL system. Am i wrong in thinkin this? Help a newbie out!

Thanks
