i currently have a setup consisting of one 4 channel amp for the 2 fronts and 2 rears. now i can puchase another 4 channel amp for real cheap moolah,

i was thinking of 2 bridged channels for 1 subwoofer, and the other 2 channels for 2 tweeters, now from the tweeters i would get the centre channel, would this be acceptable or would it mess out the sound.
(might get just high pitched sound for voice?)

the only way i can find out is by purchasing the amp, so i would appreciate any advice!

so il be using 3 channels

2 bridged for the sub (channel 3 & 4 bridged)
another 2 for the tweeters to emulate the centre! (channel 1 & 2)

as far as the rca's, one would be for bass, one would be for centre, so centre would be split into 2 using a y splitter, which will feed (through the amp channel 1 & 2) two of the speakers in mono mode!

Use a crossover if you want tweeters.

Center channels aren't very popular. They're meant for home speakers. It's not going to improve your sound.

I would buy a mono amp and two crossovers for the tweeters.

but if i set up 5.1, and use the .1 for the bass im missing the centre which will be the dialogue, wont i be missing that?

in songs for example.

As for your example in songs, most prerecorded music isn't recorded in 5.1. You're still only getting stereo sound, unless you're watching a DVD. (I know, there are audio DVD's that are encoded, I have a couple)

So, unless you're looking to make a mobile movie theatre (not dissing it, I'm planning on doing full 5.1 myself), you don't really NEED the center channel.

hmm! so i can live with my 4.1 sound setup then.

speaking of 4.1, my soundcard can allow 2 speaker, 4 speaker or 5.1 speaker setup in windows.

if i use 4 speaker setup i will lose the .1 for the sub, will i be able to use the 5.1 setup (which will give me centre and sub) and not use a centre?

so essentially il have:

front L/R
rear L/R
sub
(setup as 5.1 w/o the centre)

Does that make sense?

if you set your sound to 5.1 and lose the center you may find you lose the dialog.

id use the 4 speaker setup and split the line out for the rears using Y spliters. you then have 3 sets of rca's, or 6 channels. run the fronts as normal into your 4 channel amp, plus one set of the rears. then get a 2 channel and run the other set of rears into it. bridge this into a sub and set the lowpass filter to cut out high frequencies

Audiobahn just released a 6 channel amp for 5.1 applications in cars. Perhaps you guys are interested.

A center channel will make a difference in your sound provided it's done right. You need to reverse the left and right channels to do it. therefore the left center channel speaker is actually playing music from the right channel and the right center channel speaker is playing music from the left channel. It's a trick we used when we were setting up big systems back in the early 90's. I haven't seen one in use in a long time. What it does effectively is give each of the front passengers their own stage, you'll now be sitting an equal distance from the left and right speakers.

i used newbiemcnewb method, of splitting the rear channel to the amp for the sub and using the lpf, sounds much better than 5.1 w/o the centre.
