Multiple audio in - potential problems

Hi guys.

Well, my carputer project coming along like.... something that moves along quickly! lol

Just a quick question for your generous consideration. I have a Clarion DXZ-xxxx CD player/Tuner. As you may/may not know, this HU has one auxillary line in.

Now I wont go into why, but I need to run two channels into this - the carputer and a TV audio signal.

Does anyone forsee any problems running both of these sources into the line-in? My original idea was to run the TV audio into the PC and then run PC into the deck but this will mean the PC has to be on - this is no good.

Just wondering if there's any well documented phenomena regarding 2 lines of audio running into one input. The connection will be made using Dick Smiths (kind of like Tandy or Radio Shack) pre manufactured connectors as i'm trying to minimise the amount of 'home made' cabling in the carputer.

shouldn't be a problem as long as both sources are not on at the same time.

forgot to mention, you should use an a/b switch to prevent any backfeed through the other input line. this will isolate the input signals, so only 1 line is feeding into your head unit, and the other is just a dead end until you switch to it.

I see. So you think there may be an issue with one source backfeeding to the other even if only one is switched on?

i.e. there may be a problem having the TV on with the PC off as they will both be running into the one line-in. Or do you think a switch will only be required for both sources to live happily together when both on? Basically if I'm using the carputer, wont be able to use the TV - so there's only ever gonna be one on at a time.

PS - many thanks for your replies.

Why not just run something that has 2 sets of RCAs that outputs to 1 set. They sell like those game system adaptors, you know? Kinda like this http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?...duct_id=801178
maybe you could find something on a smaller scale, and specifically for audio.

Many thanks for the link. Yes I think something along those lines would be perfect for it. As mentioned, I'm trying to minimise the amount of fabrication I need to do on the wiring side of things, i figure this is the best way to prevent unwanted interference.

I think that unit would do the trick but may be difficult to source in Australia - everything else seems to be!

Get a switch, they're cheap and they're proven to work for what you're trying to do. You shouldn't risk frying expensive components when there's a cheap solution out there. Just run the wiring so you can position the switch in a convenient spot.
