How do i elimnate my headunit?

I plan on putting a car pc in my 2000 mustang. I want to eliminate my headunit but still be able to receive FM stations. Is there some sort of adapter that i can by to plug the antenna into the pc? How do i do this?

I have also a mustang gt and i'm planning on taking the head unit and hide it where the factory amplifier is and just like some people did solder 2 cat 5 cables to the radio and run it to somewhere for the head unit. The thread is around here and thatway you just need to have the stereo face anywere in the car instead of worring about the whole stereo. If wouldn't recommend going with a pc radio adapter.. it's nothing like the car stereos for the reception. Good luck.

I just finished (last weekend) this same setup with a 2001.

Remove the HU, and put the screen in that spot. Then use the dlink FM USB for the radio. BUT... big but here... get the motorola female antenna plug from Radio shack, use some cat5 cable (twisted pair for the inheriant interference elimination) and wire the center pin of the motorola to the outside shield of an RCA male plug. Then wire the shield of the motorla to the center pin of the RCA. Use one pair of the cat5 and leave as many twists as you can in place.

I get better reception in this setup than I did with the original HU.

Then wire the computer to a new amp (I got a phoenix gold - awesome!!! If you guys haven't heard of cbrstereo.com go there NOW!!).

I left all the stock speaker wire in place, and got a HU adpater and ran new wire to that, and plugged the adapter into the stock wiring harness.

Took 3 days to make everything, including a replacement tray out of plexi where the HU used to be.

Used a compaq laptop under the passenger seat, hid all the wires, and used an iGo power adapter for the laptop.

I took apart the laptop, and wired in an external power switch to the touchscreen power switch... The amp I got has anti-thump built in, so I turn on the computer manually as I enter the car.

Hardest part of the whole install - pulling off the damn dash!!

Great info, just a few questions.

Can you post some pics?

Can you explain in detail how you wired the stock speakers to the new amp? What parts did you use? Links to those parts would be appreciated.

but i want to remove my pioneer headunit all together ...there just isnt enough room in our cars...i want to fiberglass a lilliput into the radio bezel...rather than buy a motorized monitor..

Everybody seems to have the same problem - why can't anyone with some decent electronical engineer degree or something come up with a FM radio design with an external car antenna input and then a USB(2.0) interface to any PC around??? Would that be a commercial idea?
