Sound Card Line Level Output?

What is the typical voltage of the line level inputs coming from a sound card? Is there any difference between the output voltage from the motherboard sound output and a sound card output?

(trying to figure out if a line level booster is worth it)

My P4 Mini-ITX board has on-board sound. The specs say 2volt outs. My nice Alpine had 4volt outs, but as far as volume goes, they are about the same. The gains on my amp are still very low.

Not sure what an Audigy puts out at.

This is what I have... I'd like to know what the actual output voltage is... but I'll settle for advertised voltage if I have to...... I've tried looking... I can't find it anywhere.

I've seen sound card outputs between 0.5V (cheap USB sound card) to ~2V (Sound Blaster Live!).

I would try first without it. If you are boosting a signal, and then amplifying a signal, it is going to get distorted sooner.

I do believe you can use an impedance matching dealie to make amplified signal down to line level. Carver Z-5's do it.

2002liberty is an unknown quantity at this point
hey everybody sorry to be drudging up an old thread but google found this one for me and it is exactly the question i needed to ask!

im at the point where the suby needs its stereo upgraded (it is very wrong that my 2nd car, a 1969 toyota crown has a better sound system)

I am undecided on the benifits of a full blown car pc set-up... are there sound cards available iwth a decent line level output? if i can get one with at least 5V (preferably 8V would be better) then ill completely ditch the head unit and have it 100% car pc based.

If i cant then im going to have to have the pc (if i have one at all) as just an auxillery input to the head unit.

am i better off with just a decent head unit (the eclipse cd5000 is the current leading contender) and abandoning the whole pc idea all togethor?

has anyone else faced such a conundrum?

the car in queastion already has a double din headunit plus a coin tray so there is room for both a small touch screen plus a single din h/u in the dash

if i go with the cd500, it already has nav so the only advantage of a pc + screen would be movies

what are every1's thoughts?

5 or so years ago i used to work in the industry but things have changed so much! i remember 40w head units 2v preouts being impressive...
