Intigrated Amp

I'm making my carputer completely removeable. The only connection to my car will be a 12v line from the battery and a ground. And even that is going to be hidden and made to look like a cigarette lighter.

Everything, drives, mobo, screen, is to be mounted in a box. I'm considering putting a tiny (low power and physically small) amp in the box along with some 6" speakers (maybe 5 1/4" depending on room).

I know there'll be a heat issue, but will the driving speakers and amp make too much noise on my system?

Is this a stupid thought and I should abandon it now?

That would only work if you use EPIA or some small motherboard, and isolate the HD from the speaker vibration. Wouldn't it be very huge, though considering speakers, amp, LCD in there. It is great to prevent from getting jacked, however. It also would need a couple of fans like 80cm to cool the amp and HD

erm, laptop?

Seriously, this sounds nice. Maybe use the amp of some amplified speakers, which usually work at 12v.

Yup, laptop motherboard. 2.5" HDD and a USB DVD drive... I should have room. Think there is EMI problems ?

What case are you going to use? If it isn't metal, put some tin foil on the inside and ground it. If you notice interference, you can still put some metal sheets between different parts and ground them.

Definately show us some pictures!

I'm thinking I might isolate the speakers in a metal box for EMI and to cut down on vibration. It's not going to be a very high power system, I'm not looking for 15" subs or anything. Probably some good-quality 6" speakers.

I figure it's more modular and better quality than my stock HU/speakers and an FR modulator.

Do the moving elements in a speaker's megnets cause much EMI ?

Well, a speaker uses electro-magnetic fields to move the conus. So yes, there will be a field. It might be enough to ground the metal (check with a multimeter it isn't connected to one of the poles).

as long as you put metal around the speakers should keep most the magnetic field inside. Last time I pulled a computer apart that had speakers mounted inside they were setup that way.

Does it have to be a solid metal box or would a cage work?
