I was wondering if there is any software out there that can be used to set max gains without clipping etc. Something that will resemble a osiliscope, used to tweek a car audio system.

Plenty of prosumer audio programs do that but it doesnt use system sound, only sound files.


My advice, find some backyard tinkerer, or goto college and find the engineering dept, who has an oscilliscope. And u cant use music to check for clipping, u need a parametric band EQ with a good amount of sliders for real control. And a CD of audio soundwaves at different freqs. and tweak each freq in your EQ by watching the scope. Music is too chaotic to watch for clipping on an oscilliscope.

you can watch the oscilloscope in e.g. winamp, and see major clips. I was wondering about some software to automaticly do this as well. It doesn't seem like it would be too hard to write a plugin that gets the audio data, and could just drop the gains by a small amount each time comething clips. Right now I just do it by hand, by listening, but that seems like a poor way to go.

All you need is a scope and a 1kHz sine wave either from a signal generator or CD or MP3 clip. Adjust the HU volume to 3/4 volume hook up the scope to the speaker output on the amp, look at the scope and make sure that your sine wave is nice and round at the top and bottom. adjust your gain until clipping then turn it back a tad until no clipping is visible.


As for a software try True RTA look it up on Google.

not all head units start clipping at that 3/4 volume mark though, the better way would be to turn the gains way down on the amp, turn up the head until it starts to clip. at that point note that should be your max usable volume, if that's at 3/4 then fine, but i have seen anyware from a little below half to almost 90% depending on the head. Then at that point you can raise the amp till clipping & back off slightly. you may also find that different sources will clip at different levels though....
