On-board Audio VS. Sound Card

I'm not really thrilled with the current sound quality of my system.

I've got onboard audio from
VIA VT1612A 2-channel audio Codec
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Pro...=Specification

But It's really not doing it for me.
What i'm wondering is... As far as MP3's go, if i purchase a new soundcard (pci/usb2) how much improvement might i actually see?
Is it worth it to upgrade from on-board audio?

They all sound the same. The only thing you might benefit from with an external card is, its ability to expand to four channels, an EQ, sound shaping algorithms, etc etc Your basic MP3 will still sound exactly the same

there is a big differance in sound quality between my onboard sound and my extigy sound card, "they all sound the same" could not be further from the truth

When my audigy I died for no reason I was left to use my onboard sound, I think its the same chip as yours. And the sound was noticebly worse, even to untrained ears.

You have a PcChips board? The board layouts on those are designed to minimise costs, and not to minimise noise, so the onboard sound is usually quite crappy. Go for a good USB soundcard.

Do some research before going to a USB soundcard. They are overhyped and don't work that well in a carpc enviroment (limited inputs, 100% volume upon resume, the list goes on....).

And please do some of your own.
While those are valid points, not everyone has these problems,
and the sound quality is usually quite good.
