4.1 channel audio question

I would assume that you would most likely use 4.1 setup for a typical in car setup. But from my expereince with my pc speaker setups the rear channels do not usually play unless being fed a source with pro-logic or some other kind of digitally processed data or using "soundfields". So what are most of you guys without headunits doing? Running the one mini-jack out and splitting that into four channels or the 4.1 route by using the 2 seperate jacks into the front and rear and the sub jack into the sub amp? I may be wrong but I dont seem to get sound out the rear channels unless specified by the source.

I know on Creative cards there is something called CMSS (i think). You can enable it and it sends sound to all speakers.

So, is dsp feature pretty common among all the creative lines or just certain ones? Also is that problem that is posted in the above thread on for the Audigy NX or all the usb sound blasters? I planned on probally getting this one...

I'm running the kX drivers for Emu10kX hardware:
http://www.kxproject.com/

Works for Audigy 1s, SB Live! Series. You can route a 2 channel signal through it's DSP filters and tell it what to do: surrounder, copy channels, echo, delay, etc.

Doesn't work for any of the new 24 bit SB Lives or the external creative hardware though. If you want to use them, check compatibility before you buy.
