using a slim slot loader drive, anyone experience skipping? howto stop?

I'm still waiting for all my hardware components to come in the mail. An Idea popped into my head the other day and I wanted to research it a little.

I plan on molding a slim slot loader drive into my dash along with a 5" LCD screen.

Has anyone experienced skipping CDs, or DVDs doing this? Is there something I can do to stop it? Maybe some kind of buffering or something..

or if it doesn't happen at all, i have nothing to worry about

i dont think skipping is too much of an issue. but ive never dealt with the slim drives myself. but in any case, any newer drives like that should be pretty well protected against skippage.

I always thought this would be the way I would go as well, only I will want the Xenarc 7" TS instead of the 5" you mentioned. I have seen a few examples of this during this, my lurking time, so it has been done before.

PC's are generally very good at anti-skip and anti-scratch as they grab data in chuncks in advance even for music (unless you use the anologue cables i guess - but i don't even own any nevermind have them in my PC). I can play and rip CDs on my PC that wont even play on a hi-fi CD player due to scratches.

If you are using a media player based front end there is a digital error correction option but htis might jsut be for recording. DVD movies may be another matter as the movie data rates are higher but you should be ok. Use decent cables and keep lengths downt o avoid data losses etc and if you have to do a long distance use firewire or USB2 if you don't have firewire.

One interesting point would be what is the best orientation of the drive. Personally i think flat as the laser could move if it is on it's side but then again CD changers are commonly mounted sideways but HU's flat. Just avoid angles inbetween i think - althought that would look silly in your dash anyway -

it also depends a lot on the frontend. frodoplayer iirc is based off of winamp, so your gonna have to check winamp (locate the one in the frodoplayer directory) for the cd reader options. now centrafuse (which is my favorite btw ) is a custom setup, so i don't know.

also, check your system settings. if you have xp, you can have it set up to play all audio cd's in data mode regardless of the program thus eliminating the need for the audio cable, increasing skip-protection, etc..

Scouse laid it down pretty good. I'll back him on that. I've had experience with both slim-line optical drives and big ol' 5.25" drives in-car applications. Even while driving on bumpy roads I didn't have a problem.

Another thing to think about, many of the frontends can be setup so that they will automatically start ripping a cd when it's inserted. You could then just start playing the mp3s as opposed to the actual disc. I know Windows media player does this when you are ripping.
