Blown Speaker, How to prevent.
I just blew my first speaker today.
Im trying to figure out what went wrong, could i be under powering them?
Im runing Infinity Reference, thats rated up to 100W and im using a kenwood 4ch am thats rated at 60W per chanel.
the speaker still works but clips real bad...
I have the high pass filter set for the loud speakers.
Any ideas so i dont kill anymore speakers.

Or buy them at good guys with the warranty. There a lot more money that way but I had a set of Cerwin Vegas (from Best Buy) and must have blown them 6 times. Every time they took them back and gave me a new set, no questions asked. If I blow one of my infinity's I think I will buy a set from the Good Guys then return the blown ones.

you don't have to worry about underpowering them as much as you do with clipping. If you were pushing your amp real hard to get as close to the 60w as possible it's likely your amp was clipping and therfore sending a distorted signal to the speaker. which is very harmful.
the age of the speaker and it's history could have had something to do with it as well.

how high is the gain set on the amp?maybe back it down a little so you don't have to worry as much about the volume.
i have alpine v12 amps and like them a lot. good prices on ebay.

At 3-4 years, you could expect a speaker like that to blow. It wasn't the fault of loud music. As long as the amp gain was adjusted properly (no distortion) there was nothing you could have done. Buy a new one.
