Sound Skipping!! Please help

setup is a VIA M10000 w/ 512 DDR ram, 80 gig HDD, onboard soundcard, onboard video card.

Problem is....after downloading about 100 music videos i noticed about half woudn't play correctly (audio fine / no video). Some of the files play with no issues at all but some files need a codec.

so i installed PowerDVD and now they all play. Problem is the video plays but the audio is very choppy.
This also happens when playing DVD Audio media. When playing the music with only audio... no problem. When playing the audio with the video, audio skips.

What can the problem be? Seems like the bigger the file, the more likely it will skip.

lgbr has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Many music videos are encoded in m2v format. This is also used for DVD's. The best decoder I've used is from elecard. Try that one. Also try WinDVD.

I have the same problem with MP3's... Good ones, not rips. Downloads from itunes will skip even though they played perfect before. I also have an epia mII with onboard sound/video.

here is a little hint: ITS THE DAMNED 1GHZ CPU. Whens the last time you saw a decent computer use a 1ghz. IS the cpu getting really hot? Are you running a trimmed down vresion of Xp or Xp lite? Are unecessary processes running?
There is a whole ton of things you could look at.

The onboard video and audio are definately causing the problem. They just can't handle that kind of decoding. Try using an offboard sound card, usb or pci. That should isolate the processing enough to make your system struggle through it less

UPDATE:
i updated my audio drivers from VIAs site and now things are better but not fixed.
Before on some files where video and audio would skip, now the audio is fine but the video still skips.
i should probably try a offboard video card.

CPU IS NOT HOT. RUNNING WIN2K. I HAVENT MODIFIED THE OS AT ALL. THE CPU IS RUNNING AT 15-20% AT MOST WITH iTUNES OR WINAMP. IT SEEMS LIKE THE SKIPPING IS GETTING PROGRESSIVLY WORSE.

I AM DEFRAGING THE HD TO SEE IF THAT WILL TAKE CARE OF THE PROBLEM. MOST OF MY SONGS ARE CD QUALITY WAV FILES BUT MP3'S SKIP TOO. AND THE DRIVE WAS FRAGGED REALLY BAD.

AND IT NEVER DID THIS UNTIL I PUT THE COMPUTER IN THE CAR.

coconut: The defrag is a good start. How much RAM do you have? Are you running amps for your speakers? Do you have a HU still? Is the system FM modulated if not amped? If the skipping isnt from the PC then its from something outside the system. IF the defrag doesnt work and it worked fine before it was in your car then the problem is more than likely electrical related and taking place outside the PC
