is there an optical equalizer?
hi all, i have a problem with my setup. I'm currently using a completely optical setup. I have my carputer connected to a SB Audigy2 NX, and from there, and optical cable to my PG 5.1MT amp. The problem i have is that i'm getting high frequency sound and can't get rid of it. I've tried the SB equalizer and it doesn't work. It's like 8 bands, with the highest being like 8k. It's really giving me a headache.
I do have a normal equalizer, but i figure it's a waste to put that into my setup. Is there an optical equalizer i can get? Is there any other solutions? Thanks

If I were you I would locate the source of that high freq. An eq shouldn't be the only option you have. I ran an SB 5.1 live w/Alpine 510 EQ 48kHz optical input to changer port and then out to multiple amps - extremely quiet noise floor in my '65 Mustang. Now I have Firewire output to M-Audio 1814 which in turn is Optical input to changer port on the 510 and very little noise and only on right channel when car is running - not sure why the noise but very faint and does not increase with volume.
So, make sure your SB is configured with the right freq for the fibre optic ie 44.1/48 kHz. DON'T use cheap fiber optic cable - can cause problems like data loss and maybe the problem your having. I did a fiber optic interface to a stock MB 500 system for an ipod and the fiber optic ends weren't even flat and smooth/polished and there were all sorts of noises in there. When I filed it flat and polished it the system worked fine. When I first set up the new system in my car I ran a good quality fiber optic to the trunk - as I bought a cheapie and didn't like what I saw once out of the package. Anyways, some weeks latter I tried using it to connect 1814 to 510 in the trunk cause that's all I had that night and it wouldn't even pass a signal = no sound!
So make sure you have the best fiber optic cable you can afford and see if that works.
If you have any more information let me know.

well i don't think that there's really any configuring that i can do that i haven't done. There's sound quality settings, but nothing like what you are talking about 44.1/48kHz settings. I kinda wish there was, but i've looked everywhere to see what settings i can tweak. No luck
as for the type of optical cable, i'm using a shielded monster cable. I don't know how good it is, but it works fine. I yanked it from my home audio system.

eq's/filters are bandaids for problems that you can get rid of at the source.. just gotta guess-and-check with grounds and such to find it i suppose

OK - monster cable should be better than you need. Make sure no dirt/dust/debris blocking the light path at either end.
Since the SB device is USB you may want to unplug ALL other devices running on USB to see if it cleans up - maybe the freq of rotating USB IOs is the freq you hear, don't know.

i know that i should try fixing things at the source, but i'm just wondering if i can't get it working the way i want, is there an optical input/output equalizer out there on the market, or is it all done through RCA's

yeah i'm sure it's not engine noise. with an optical setup, i didn't think that was even possible.
