Box Loudness.... Help?
HarlanC03: from what I'm hearing you've designed a vented box thats just larger?
HarlanC03: and designed to the specifications of his sub
Thaiboxing101: sent
HarlanC03: alright
Thaiboxing101: he has the cutout dimensions
BruteFORCE70: ok
Thaiboxing101: for all the top, bottom, sides and front and port boards
Thaiboxing101: the box HAS to be constructed the exact way that it's drawn
Thaiboxing101: everything sandwiches between the top and bottom
HarlanC03: yeah dude I know how to make a vented box.
Thaiboxing101: front and back sandwich between the two sides
HarlanC03: Did you see my earlier questions?
Thaiboxing101: yes
HarlanC03: and?
Thaiboxing101: Thaiboxing101: yes
HarlanC03: Okay, why do you think this will "quadruple" the sound level of his subs?
Thaiboxing101: he mentioned he has a sealed system
HarlanC03: He currently has a vented box.
HarlanC03: with one central vent
BruteFORCE70: no
Thaiboxing101: then it'll be doubled
HarlanC03: how do you figure?
Thaiboxing101: with no extra power needed
Thaiboxing101: does it matter?
HarlanC03: Well, based on the fact that I think you made that up, yes.
Thaiboxing101: i don't figure..i know
HarlanC03: Why not do a vented enclosure
Thaiboxing101: and BruteFORCE....your friend is a jack ***.........keep or ditch the design..i'll not waste my time anymore
HarlanC03: errr ported
Thaiboxing101: bye
I was just wondering of you guys, my buddy has two JL Audio w3's with a 500/1 amp. They're currently in a vented box with one central vent. This guy claims that seperating them into two seperate boxes with one vent each will double the sound level. I asked why not go ported? he avoided it... but my buddy jsut wants his stereo to be louder. What type of box would you guys recommend?
Thanks!

Is your buddies box designed by JL for those subs? If so it is very hard to make the box better. Unless the box is poorly constructed. But assuming the enclosure is properly constructed and it is a JL designed enclosure not likely to get better. Now if the box is not properly constructed build a new one that is. If it is not a JL designed enclosure find out what JL recommends and possibly build another to their specs.
Or he can add two more woofers or double the power.

It might make a difference, just because each sub is only pushing it's own airspace. So it might make the response a little tighter. Plus it might be more efficient because you'd have two vents instead of one. But I do agree, if they're in a JL box, that'd be as perfect as you get it.
However, I don't think it will create a 'miraculous' amount of bass.

It's a generic vented box, I was under the impression that vented had no sealed anything about it, and that ported had two chambers one side of which was sealed and the other that had the ports about it?

your thinkng of bandpass which is good for spl but is usually bad for sql. It is also difficult to make because everything has to be perfect otherwise it will sound horrible. If your friend is using a generic box he should probably make his own. He will most likely get better results. Generic boxes are not tuned for the sub and they are sometimes made poorly.

lil_ace is correct...it would be best to build a JL designed vented enclosure.

typically, a monobox is a sub box that's one chamber, no matter how many subs are mounted to the box, they are a bit louder, but I don't think it's worth worrying about honnestly....
you say your friend wants louder....
sounds like he's got the subs to do what he wants, and possibly the amp.....my next place to look would be power wire....if it's not big enough then he's not getting enough juice to that amp and it's not going to be at the top of it's game....
you say 2 JL audio W3s.....what 12s?
in what vehicle? in a suburban or a hatch back?
if the box isn't to JLs specs I would definately rebuild to their specs, and build the hell outta it....i'm talking at least a single layer of 3/4" MDF, wood glue AND screws/air nails, and silicone all joints once it's all put together....

His box is in a 92 Caddilac (minds blanking on the model) 4 door with box in trunk. He has two 12" JL W3's and didn't spare any quality/money by getting the bigger amp, what size power wire should he be running? Any bigger than 4 gauge?

well there's the first problem - he's got a boat of a car, which means a boat load of cabbin space, which means it's not going to pressure worth a ****....
the subs are in his trunk, he's got a rather thick layer of insulation (sound deadening) seperating him from those subs.....read: back seat
cars don't ever sound as loud as hatchbacks or trucks because the driver doesn't share the same air space as the subs.....
4 gauge should be enough for that amp....
when he says that he wants it louder, what is he basing this off of?
is he saying this because he has heard other cars with the same set-up? is he one of those people who wants to be heard from a block away? (god, I hope not) just trying to figure out if he just needs more sub/amp or if he says he wants more because he just wants more?

He lost a sound competition for "all high-school" by about 3 dB. Just wants to improve it so he can come closer or hopefully 1st. What do you know about trunk porting? If he ported his trunk and dynomatted the whole inside of his trunk how effective would that be?

oh - so he lost some local show by 3 db and now he wants to be louder?
is he wanting to start competing? because if so, he needs to get out of the high-school game and realize that that 3 db will easily turn into 10+db in the real game....lol
matting the trunk wouldn't hurt, but it's a lot of money for not that much gain
he needs to focus on sealing off the car completely, which can be accomplished with matt, but again expensive.
there's a whole are to competing. There are a lot of little things that can be done that go beyond the subs/amp/box. Most people equate SPL with just those 3 things, truth is, a serious SPL vehicle (even if it's just for the street) will consider thse things second, after getting the basics out of the way....
like a head unit. If he's running some ghetto hu, he could do a lot to upgrade to one with a stronger signal....while this isn't critical, it can help....
what numbers did he hit btw? and who put on this 'show'? was it an official sanctioning body like USACi? dB Drag? SLAP? IASCA? what kind of meter were they using.
Unless he's serious about getting into this stuff, tell him he needs to realize that there is a lot more to just being loudest at your high school....lol
if he wants to impress he needs to get out of that cacoon and play with the big dogs (sorry, dawgs....lol)

First off, get a car that you can actually get SPL in. Secondly... the car isn't very becoming to 'sound levels'. He might need to fill the trunk with four subs, or go up to 15" if he just wants 'loud'..
As said, it can get expensive fast.
