Stock Head Unit

i own a 2001 chevy impala and right now the stereo is completely stock. i am seriously considering throwing in a computer with a touch screen and this website has been the greatest help so far. before i was thinking that first i'd throw in a new head unit and wire the computer through the rca's on the back. then i realized something. my stock stereo does have an AUX input as do most chevy cars. how would i use this imput with my computer? where could i find an adapter? is it even possible? i dont really want to get an fm transmitter or a new headunit as those would probably cost more. any help or advice you can give would really help.

also would i lose anythign by running my stock head unit through an amp and then to subs and speakers or would i really just be better off buying a new head unit?

thanks

If you want better sound quality, more features, less hassle, and a better looking unit, then yes a new headunit is the way to go.

I'm curious how you say "my stock stereo does have an AUX input as do most chevy cars." Other than ones with rear-seat DVD entertainment, i've NEVER seen an aux input on a chevy without an adapter.

well cehvy only makes a few headunits and the one in my car is the exact same as the ones in the cars with entertainment systems. except theres no cd player or dvd player. so i would imagine that there is an AUX input on back because there is a button, but i havent torn my car apart yet to find out.

also, with my car i need to keep my stock hu in because it has the onboard computer. it is possible to wire it into the trunk though and still get all the features. i think i might just throw it in the trunk.

Having a "AUX" button on the HU doesn't mean there is an aux input "ready". Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix owners are crying on GM "deceptive" AUX button.
Jahntassa and I, both know that very well.
