Hi All,
Thought I'll spin this thread to share some of my experience with modding radioShark.. I hope to hear from the rest of you too about how much success you've had with it in the car.
Today its fairly decent, maybe about 70% of HU quality ... minus some bad hissing (prob due to multipath interference and other stuff).
1. Best quality would be to have the fin outside the car and drive around! Reception is good all around mostly. No modifications necessary.
2. I removed the shell, connected the car antenna to the headphone jack and also soldered it in place of the original FM antenna. No good at all.
3. I soldered a length of single core wire (dunno the gauge size) ... about 1.5 - 2m of it... lined it under my rear windscreen and it improved to like 40% of HU
4. I did the same thing as point 3, i lined the wire along the opening of the trunk lid.... and i got about 60% of HU quality.
All the quality measure is an average (or guess) when the vehicle is moving.
Now some of you might have seen the variable inductors and capacitors on the PCB inside with some hot glue on them... i suppose those are used to tune the antenna calibration. Now I have a weird feeling that apart from soldering the car's antenna to it we'll need to make some adjustments to those to improve the reception quality.
Should we start to crack this mystery together? Any takers? I have enough radioSharks for me to make mistakes if I blow up something....
All this fuss while we wait patiently for the experts to finish a HU quality FM/AM tuner for carPCs...
Cheers!
