headphone jack misery

So the headphone jack on my laptop broke off the other day, and now my system has no sound. I took the bastard apart completely (had to remove all but 5 screws) and imagine my surprise when I found 5 seperate pins inside instead of 3!

Not to be discouraged, I pressed on and soldered a new headphone jack to what I thought were the signal pins, and put the whole mess back together.

Still no sound, but I did get PC speaker beeps through the headphones. So i took it completely apart again and rewired. now I have no sound. So I have to take it apart again. Can anyone enlighten me as to how the heck to wire this thing properly? I'm about to just wire an ethernet cable to the mobo, and then try combinations until I hear something.

This is an old pentium 3 compaq laptop.

If you still have the "broken" part, line it up to see which go to where.
Other than that, you have to get another similar laptop to open it out and see the pin.

You really need to find a jack like the one that came off. The extra contacts are used to cut the internal speakers when you plug something into the jack, and re-enable them when you remove it.

the term for the type of connector is called "normalizing"

Hope that helps ya out a bit in your search.
