The real reason for the extra wire is to ground the amp and the hu together so that it would decrease any ground differential between the two. Thus cancelling out ground looping noise.
Haha, yeah, I used it as the remote turn on wire and it definately didnt work. A few months later, I had to rerun a new wire in for the turn on. Funny thing is that it was for my friend, so I just did it to save time and money (yes, that whole 2 dollars for 20 ft of wire). I guess thats why you never should just assume what somethings for, heh.

How do you figure on needing that thick of wire for the signal? I think except for the time mentioned above, I have used 18 with no problems.
