vw mk4 monson amp and another amp

well what happened is i did not know that vw where so stupid to not have a remote turn on, on the monsoon amp... and I had wired the whole car up only to find this out at the end and after reading and reading found out that if 5v is appled to the left (-) negative(common) channel it turns the amp on... the problem is that i had another amp wired already and was to lazy to remove it and just us the vw amp and also did not want to cut the other amp out as is seems to be more of a crossover then really a amp and too cheap to buy crossovers in it's place... so when 5v was appled to the left (-) common channel the other amp, being a store bought amp has a overload protection on it and would go into protection.... well to fix this i built a little circuit that would allow me to pass ac and block the dc from going back into the amp....

parts needed

2- 1000uF 35V electroletic caps
1- 10k ohm resistor
1- 7805 or any 5 v voltage regulator

if you put the two 1000uF caps with the negative together then one of the postive sides is the input for the left (-)and the other is the output for the left (-) creating a dc filter... then on the output put the 5v output of the regulator together then with the resistor put it from the gnd of the regulator to the output of the cap as well. then just tie the lefts (+) together and hook the gnd of the regulator to the gnd of the amp and the Vn of the regulator to the remote turnon of the second amp...

this is really hard to explane in text if somebody needs help just ask i can try to explane again in a different way.

left(+)<----------------------------->left(+)
output input

left(-)<-----(+)-||-(-)(-)-||-(+)----->left(-)
output | input
|_______5v output_____________|-----|
| 12v input>---------------------|7805|
|____10k res__________________|_____|
|
---
-- gnd

sorry that is the hardest diargam to draw with keyboard chars.

the only problem is there is a bit of gnd noise when the computer boots right now and goes away once computer is booted i will have to filter out that gnd noise but thats later.

So you can verify R32 Juhls setup?

This cicuit you made is only so that you can serial the two amps together?

When you ran the 5v to the left common, how exactly did you do that? And did you tap into the wiring harness or build your own?

Thanks!

i ran a harness i made with the aftermarket hu adaptor to the amp in the rear... yes if you are to enter 5v dc on the left... any left common the amp will turn on...

I couldn't really understand the keyboard schematic... can you put a picture of the schematic somehow? I'll PM my email to you if you can email it to me. Thanks!

Alimh...the more I look at this I don't think this is the answer to our problem. He's built a circuit to run two amps in a row aftermarket into the monsoon and he's built a circuit that converts the 12v trigger to the aftermarket amp into the "left common 5v" trigger that the monsoon needs.

I'm curious though, Colorless, why did you need to make a DC filter, where is the AC current coming from?

the ac is the output of the first amp... the dc is what i am putting into the second amp to turn it on without the dc filter the first amp would go into overload protection...

the thing you guys want is just a 7805 or any 5v regulator... put in 12V from a switched output like your ign line to the Vin of the regulator you can steal this off any accessior that turns on once the car is running a good source is the heated seat control... then gnd the the gnd... brown in vw is gnd then with the Vout the 5v just tie this to the any left speaker wire...in my case it had to be the negative front or rear does not matter...

that will turn on the monson amp with out a head unit

Ok, so if I read this correctly, you're giving us a way to convert any old 12V line (like the accesory line of the heated seat line) to the to 5V in the monsoon needs to turn on. I don't have another amp, but this still seems useful.

yes you can do it without another amp just remove the two caps... you could leave the caps to make sure the 5v does not go back into your computer or line level converter.

hey, think u can help? when i applied 5v to the left common, the sound worked. however, the speaker wire got VERY VERY VERY hot. and i mean HOT. anyone know if i did something wrong or if i just need a thicker gauge wire? i used 18 gauge speaker wire and a 1/8stereo to 1/4 rca adapter cable i had laying around. the adapter cable got the hottest. the speaker wire was warm except the soldered points. any ideas?

what gauge did u use?

what i did was this. i stole the 5v from the computer (red wire) with 18 gauge wire then simply connected it to the left common. the audio is split this way, a 1/8 to rca cable from the computer...spliced and soldered into 4 lines of 18 gauge speaker wire for FR, FF, RR, and RF. anything connecting to the monsoon amp was connected at the grey harness on the amp with radioshack tap line connectors.

whit the 5v regulaotr i used a heat sink so all the heat is being removed with the regulator as it is only rated at 1 amp so no worrys the output of the car puter could be up to 5 amps. i would use a regulator if i where you.

So are you feeding the 5V signal through the entire car harness... all the way back to the radio?
