Sub Box
Coppied from another forum (need answers fast lol!)
Quote:
So I am looking on how to do my sub box and I have a few options.
First off the sub is 12" and is ~7.5" deep, I am going to give it at least a good 10 inches deep. If I need more than 2.5" between the rear of the sub, and the rear of the box, let me know!
So I can do just a standard box, (shooting for just over 1 cubic foot). Looking at like 18" x 13" x 13" for about 1.25 cubic feet (width of MDF included). But that forces me to either center the box and have some practically unusable trunk space on either side, or move it to a corner in which case it wont look so good with space behind etc.
So I came to fiberglass. I could make a fiberglass on the side which could hold the sub and it would be (roughly) 13"x13"x (top 16", bottom 14", back seat is slanted). For around 1.2 cubic feet (MDF considered all around, fiberglass wont be quite .75 inches thick though).
So fiberglass seems like a good bet, form fitting, more trunk space allowed, etc. etc. One problem I get to is however where do I aim the sub?
I dont think it could aim directly rear (and I think that would sound bad since it would be on one side of the trunk) and aiming it to the other side of the trunk may sound good (I am assuming on the sound you want it to shoot as symetrically as possible?) or I could even fiberglass the majority of the container with an MDF ring and shoot it right back to the opposite corner. In this case I would probably make a frame from MDF, an MDF ring, and then chickenwire the frame and start fiberglassing or sumin like that.
Any ideas? Should I just not worry about where I aim the sub? I am also looking for something very temporary mounting wise, hoping to screw it to existing holes etc. (shouldn't be hard, may not be very pretty but I hope to do another deck as well as a computer back there in the near future so will be redoing it all soon anyway).
And finally, how much is the fiberglass method run? If its much more expensive than the MDF since im looking for temporary I would probably just do the MDF for now. And if I am not going for show quality does it matter if I place the sub to one side or the other?
THANKS!
Thanks guys, hoping to start building tomorrow!

Hey dude. I know nothing about fiberglassing, but I did just finish building myself a nice sub box out of wood. One thing you DEFINITELY need to consider is the air space behind the woofer in the box. Each sub is designed with a specific volume in mind back there. Deviating from that will affect the response time and possibly the pitch of the woofer. You can either do some calculations and just try to match your the space of your current box (as long as it was made by the manufacturer, or someone who would know enough to check the air volume in the box) or check the website of the manufacture. Such information is usually pretty easy to ascertain.
Hope this helps, and I hope it goes well for ya.

to write it all out takes more time than I have right now.....and that's a LOT of time...lol

If its gunna be that simple and not fited to a specific area why not just make it out of mdf. Much simpler and quicker. Ive never built a fiberglass box before but a well designed mdf box with dynamat lining the inside sound great to me. Just always thought fiberglass was used for boxes of exotic design or to fit in a tight or odd shaped space. Any well good luck, post pics

Copied my post from MyMonte forums about my sub box install.
Quote:
Okay newish plan.
I noticed while looking that apparently the driver side of the trunk IS different, I didn't realize the gas tank is there and thus there is a lot less room, especially when talking width (between the rear of the tire well/gas tank to the opening of trunk).
So I have a few new ideas. (FYI when I am talking the trunk and I say; rear, back, etc... I mean of the car, IE where it opens. If I talk front/etc. I mean right behind the bak seats).
Tilted sub in passenger opening corner
Okay this idea places the sub in the rear of the trunk on the passenger side. The sub would be tilted towards the corner of the opposite side. This would allow me to make an awsome fiberglass enclosure that wouldnt stick out in the trunk alot, if I shouldn't be tilting it (and firing it to the opposite side directly) it would still be possible just not as good looking.
I kinda figured firing direction basics don't matter too much, even by firing it directly to the rear (like a standard aimed sub) the trunk just isnt completly symetrical so it's never going to be perfect, and so we are working at varrying degrees of perfect. And since I'm not looking for some sort of competition setup I am not too worried about aiming direction, but I'd like some opinion of others if possible .
Anyway it would basically go from the opening to the back of the tire well, completly sealed off via fiberglass and MDF where it will work. Head units will be mounted probably on the other side in the spot.
Behind back seat on side
This makes it aimed more traditionally being in the forward most position of the trunk, fired towards the rear. It wouldn't be "perfect" in that it would be in the corner and not the middle. MDF enclosure would run from side to side, on one side the sub would be installed in sealed container, and on the other side Head Units (and eventually maybe the PC). On top of the box, my giant 2 foot sub amp.
One thing I would be worried about is sub rattling the Headunits and PC (eventually) which could be bad. Also the head units are accessible, but not conveinantly. I guess it's not like I'll need them often but still then like someone said why not just tuck em away invisible I guess. And the rattle thing has me real worried.
Standard sub box install
Just a standard cubic foot box centered in the front of the trunk all normal and boring like . On the driver side (where the gas tank is) I could install the headunits fia fiberglass. On the passenger side the PC. Downside of this install? Kinda plain and normal/boring IMO. Also the sides on the sub box are basically worthless, I mean not really but I think it would look really crappy just having big empty spots there on either side.
So, my favorite idea is the first one, my natural concern is the aiming of the sub. Also it doesnt take the PC into account, but the PC isn't coming for a while so I am kinda making this setup to be until then. But yea, would be nice to not have to redo the entire thing when PC comes!
