Wiring an amp in a car with factory deck.
My friend wants to put an amp in his car and doesn't want to buy a new deck.
Is this possible? His deck doesn't have preamp outputs or a remote wire.
How can this be done?
Thanks

Yo
u can use high level inputs. Which means you wire each speaker channel ie the positive and negative of each of his speakers in the amp. This is the less desirable way but will work for your application. As for a remote turn on you can run a line from the acc position on the ignition. So whenever the car is on the radio's amp is on. Good luck.

yes that would work or you could run a loc (line output converter) takes the high level and converts it to a low level out (rca out) a good converter will run around $20 this will let you tie into the front or rear left and right channels to get a rca out

Do what the above posters told you, connecting an amp to power is easy, run your x gauge wire to the pos, ground the neg, and then run your speaker wire to your subs in what ever Ohms you desire.

But by using a speaker level to line level reducer (whether in the amp or external) will seriously (ie you will hear the difference ) degrade the sound. Far better to get a new head unit with line out, and spend a little less on the other.

I guess what you mean is that he intends to use the stocker speakers hooked up to the head unit. Then he wants to also have his new sub hooked up to a new amp and somehow connected to the head unit.
Actually I don't know how to do this. I suppose you could clip the rear speakers and run the rear outs into your amplifier... but then you have no rears. I'm not sure if you could run the rear speakers and a LOC in parrallel, but something about that idea makes me think it won't work too well.
Anyone else???

I originally had this problem on my jeep, let me see if I can find some pictures of this. I can say, using an aftermarket HU sounds a hellofalot more nicer than stock.

Alright, My pictures I have of my old HU install are not what I was looking for, I can tell you that when I bought the parts, I went up to my local cartoys and got all the wiring stuff I needed. I got this small black box, about the size of a coldcathode transformer box. It had about 1/2 dozen small 16 gauge wires out of one side and two rca outputs. I tapped into the rear left speaker line. To the best of my knowledge (again this was like 8 months ago when I was stereo idiot) the black box changed the signal to RCA, because at the time I was using a OEM HU. let me do some searching online.
I'm going to take it out on monday, and the box is still there, I'll take pictures for you then if I cant find anything on the interweb.

Here you go, this is exactly what I have, but in a differnt form...

I think you may be able to find it cheaper if you shop around. edit: Note, thats for a 2 channel amp or 4 channel.

You can just tap into the rear speaker wires with a T-Tap and a male spade connector. No need to cut them and lose the rear speakers. Then just run the wires from there to the input converter an RCA cables from that to the amp. The sound quality isn't as awful as they make it sound. I have had aftermarket h/u's and will upgrade the factory h/u in my truck someday but this is how mine is hooked up and it sounds pretty darn good.

sorry to dig this up but...
are rca cables basically just positive and negative speaker wire? my amp already has a low pass filter on it and if i hacked off an end to an rca cable and wired it to my left and right rear speakers would that work?
thanks!
