Engine Whine eliminated using SPDIF??

When my carpc installed in my other car, i can hear engine whine. The setup:

PC minijack -> RCA on amp -> Speakers

will this eliminate the whine??:

PC SPDIF (coax) -> 5.1 processor (eg. ADD51T) -> Amp -> Speakers

This is using the builtin soundcard in VIA M10k. Anybody?

It might, but you will be swapping one set of problems for another. For starters, you can still get noise introduced between the 5.1 decoder and your amp, so you have no guarantee that the setup will work.

The bigger problem is generating the 5.1 AC3 signal, as this is *NOT* something that almost all PC soundcards to by default. Almost all PC sound cards generate only 2-channel PCM through the SPDIF port, and use Dolby Pro-Logic encoding to get 4-channel output. Furthermore, the Pro-Logic encoder in the Epia boards is terrible and the output sounds far worse than the analog outputs.

You can use ac3filter (ac3.sourceforge.net) to generate a true 5.1 digital signal through the SPDIF output (there is a FAQ on this floating arround the forums) but this is not for the faint of heart. Unless you know the difference between ProLogic and Dolby Digital, you are much better off reducing your engine noise through proper installation techniques. Only if this fails should you consider going the digital route.
