"XM Ready" is waaay too confusing!
Ok, my Alpine 9830 is "XM Ready". I guess i need the tuner and the antenna. But now I see a "digital adapter". do I need the alpine digital adapter also? The XMD1000 is the tuner+antenna kit I want. I also see the adapters for alpine, sony etc... do I need one of these also? Thanks

You will need the XM adapter to hook your XM direct to your HU......
or you can use your XM adapter as an Auxillary in for your HU...in other words, the sound from your computer will go to your XM adapter and your XM will run through your PC......
Does this help?

No, you can't.... generally speaking.
The Adapter is required to "adapt" the direct to your XM ready deck.
My pioneer deck uses the P-Bus plug from the deck to the adapter and 12V power... the adapter has an input side for audio, and 8(?) pin din plug from the XM direct...
But, I use the audio in. The audio comes from the PC.
If you are using the XM on ly, the 8pin goes from the XMD box to the adapter. The audio goes from the XMD to the Adapter.
The adapter plugs in to the HU using a propietary bus cable from the HU manufacturer. In my case a P-bus adapter cable.
In other words you need some sort of adapter to communicate the data from the XMD to the HU.....
The computer does this in a Car PC setup..... much better, in my opinion.

Alright I know this, I sell and install these things everyday. Some maybe even most alpine HU are both XM and SIRIUS ready, even though your model states "xm ready" some of the equiptment
You have 2 options
1. if you want Sirius they make a kit for AI-net interfaces in one package for just $100
2. If you want XM, you have to get two pieces:
a. Terk's XMD1000 universal tuner for $50
b. Terk's XMDALP100 alpine smart digital addapter for $50
Like i said both should work in most alpines that have an AI-net plug. I've never had a problem hooking thoes up to the alpines that just say "XM Ready" opposed to now where they say "Sat Ready." They're the exact same price, easy install. Now you my have a choice between services.
