Hacking Blaupaunkt CAN Interface RCI-4A interface

Dear all

i have a 2005 Golf Mk5 which uses CAN bus for just about everything.

so in order to integrate with the carpc better, i purchased a Blaupunkt CAN Bus interface RCI-4A-VW in an attempt to hack out the Acc, Illuminiation, reverse & speed pulse signal.

http://www.bluespot.co.uk/install/show_model.asp?id=294

everything works as plan except for the illumination signal. the strange thing is that it seemed to be a pulse signal at 1kHz and it doesn't work with my car pc as a result. i know i can just pull a illumination line from the ashtray light, but i really hate lose ends.

anyone has any idea?

I would guess that this is a PWM (pulse width modulated) signal so you can get variable brightness. If so, the pulse width should increase as you turn the dash illumination brightness up.

On the Blaupunkt CAN adapter, there are 4 DIL witches to select which radio you want to interface with. Have you tried changing the setting to see if this makes a difference?

How did you plan to interface the illumination signal to the CarPC?

Mike.

kind of cool if you think about it.

yup. tried all permutations, some of which not listed in the manual. all at 1kHz.
didn't try to change brightness though, but it certainly would have made sense

ah. that's only because my CarPC is a commercial one and hence has in for the illumination signal

it dims the main LCD and light up the button and display backlighting, as shown
