How do you control sound?
I was wondering I see all these projects some with jsut the lcd but other with a HU as well but I was wondering what are people doing to control the volume level. From what ive read most epople generaly dont want to mess with it on thier touchscreen. And if you run the sound through an optical cable you apprently have no sound control until after the signal has been changed back into analoge. Dont mind my stupidity if it seems that way im jsut new to this.

I'm going to use the Control Unit for my Alpine PXA-H701 DSP; it has integrated volume controls.

I have wired my steering controls to a keyboard controller which then connect to the PS2 port on my CarPC. I have then mapped the keys in RR to the Volume controls - Works perfectly

I know the bass knob isn't but it gives me more control on the fly of my bass which is nice. Also with my install i don't want a head unit there if I wanted that i would not built a car computer. Thats my thinkin with this sorta thing but the phidget encoder works great for a volume knob if you were wondering....

just to clarify - the alpine that we are talking about is NOT a head unit - it's NOT anywhere as deep as a headunit, and it doesn't play cds in it....
that phidget encoder is pretty sweet! do you have pics of that installed in your link in your sig?

Basically schematic looks like this:
CarPC -> Alpine PXA-H701 -> Amp -> Speakers
Did I get this right ?

If you have HU connect the PC output to its aux in and you can use hte HU to control the volume.
Without HU:
1. With DSP: some DSP have volume control so you can use that
2. Amp with wired remote gain control: you can use this as an alternative but be careful not to push it too high as this is not the same as the volume control but in can serve the same purpose.
3. No choice but use the volume control on the PC
