This will be the second time this thread is revived. Sorry about that. I'm just wondering if hellbent ever got this to work for his Altima. I found this forum because I have a 2005 Nissan Altima with the same problem. FM transmitters aren't cutting it for me anymore and I'm not ready to buy an aftermarket head unit for my car.

Hello everyone,

A newbie addition to the forum.

I have 2006 Altima and I am trying the above mentioned procedure to connect my ipod. I have the radio opened and ready to solder some wire.
Hellbent1, did you ever get this to work. If yes can you help me out.
Once all the above procedure is done, does one still require a FM modulator or does it directly connect IPOD to the factory radio. I do not have a CD changer, only factory radio with single CD player.

Please reply earliest.

Yes. The mod can be done. I've done it twice. I bought the same stereo as the one on my '05 Altima... from Ebay to try it out first. The mod took about an hour. Once I successfully tested the unit... I pulled the head unit from my car and performed the same mod. SUCCESS!

The difference with my mod is that I didn't go as far as adding an RJ45 connector... and I have a cable leading out of the head unit, down towards the shifter, and mounted DPDT 3.2mm stereo jack next to my 12V power receptacle opposite the hazard switch. One prerequisite needed for this setup to work, is to keep an audio CD in the machine. Once the cable from mp3 player is plugged into the jack... the CD audio signal will be cut off and the mp3 signal pass through.

One thing I realized I should have done after all was completed... was to add a ground loop isolating ckt within the head unit to eliminate the whine from the alternator. Granted, there is no whine when playing from mp3 player's headphone jack to the input. But if you use the docking connector (with power) like I do... you may hear a slight whine as you press the gas pedal. This also happens to my JVC hu with AUX built in... so I guess it's normal. I just use an external noise filter in-line from player to jack.

As for the test head unit... I'll probably put in back on Ebay.

I just tried this mod on my factory radio, and unfortuanatly it does not work right. I've tried a couple different combinations but I just can't get anything to play from my Ipod. It will play just fine when I switch back to the CD player, but will not play anything when I try it through the 3.5mm jack.

Note: I used a DPST 3.5mm audio jack to automatically switch from the CD L/R signal to the mp3 L/R signal. This connection shares the common ground from the CD player and mp3. I didn't think this would be a problem, but now I'm thinking that I'll have to make each of the grounds (CD and mp3) separate as well.

Any thoughts?

I learned from this thread how to do this years ago from this thread. I did it in my car with a pioneer and my mom's nissan sentra oem radio. I learned that the r+ and left+ are often labeled.

That was after a bad experience where I bought a new pioneer radio. It was labeled too, but I didn't look hard enough. I took the thing apart and and alligator clipped it where necessary and poked the feed from the mp3 player to the ground and then to various pins coming out of the tuner until i heard sound. I tried it one more time and accidentally touched the radio housing to the 12+ from the battery and end of story.

So that's basically my problem, if the board isn't labeled, then all I know to do is get it powered and try and touch an audio feed to different potential candidates. Amplifier ic pinout searches almost always fail, and especially in my current situation.

I'm trying to do this for a friend who has a 70's era corvette pace car for nascar. He wants to try and keep the original 8 track radio. For obvious reasons, I don't wanna take such risks as before, but there's no label and the ic's are ancient. So how does one go about poking around for the pinouts?

There's a huge volume control potentiometer and it has it's own pcb board with two Ic's that have share a heatsink. The ic's appear to be r and l from the board labeling. They have a connection to power through that potentiometer that disconnects when you turn it off.

Does anyone here have any idea what to do?

Progress, I found something pertinent. This guy made the aux input by simply knowing what to look for on the board, no disassembled power ups.

I'll be trying this, basically, whether tape, radio, or cd, they all eventually go to the same spot an get amplified, ( i think

I'll post if it works.

I made a homemade oscilloscope with headphones. did what the guy said, and poked around on the amplifier ic for anything that looked like audio, heard takin car of business, i turned the amplication all the way up and down, got the same volume in the headphones, things look like a go! I'll make a forum post if I can to share this info with all in a generalized manner

a power up was necessary though, but not dissasembled, simply had to take the bottom off and the 8-track out.
