Alpine Type X: 3 10's or 2 12's?
I'm gonna be upgrading my subs, and I'm thinking about going for the Alpine Type X's because I've heard good things about them....supposedly they compete with JL W7's at half the cost.
With the Alpine's in mind, I can't decide on wether to go two 12's or three 10's. I've had 12's for a while, I like their ability to hit deep and low, but they just plain suck when it comes to anything other than rap. I'm wondering if 10's will still sound good with hip hop/rap and if 3 tens will be loud enough...how would they compare to 2 12's?

it's more in the box design, not so much the subs.
larger box will hit deeper
smaller box will not hit as deep
if you only have a given amount of room, and it's a good amount for the 2 - 12s, and you would be cutting it close on the 3-10s, go with the 12s. If you have a ton o room, go with the 10s...make sense?

smaller box also increases power handling but still dont go very high man...id get 2 12's because its cheaper to power and with all teh ruls of dB gain, it will be as loud, if not it COULD be louder

one Type X is gonna be loud, so maybe three would be 2 many for daily driving so id go with the 2 12's... should sound good post some pics if u decide to go with them. do u plan on building your own box?

I don't think anything is to much for my daily driving..... hahaha I have 2 10's right now and sounds pretty darn good. But I sure would like to move to 12's. But I went withthe 10's for the reason of space.... I say if you have the room to build the proper box for the 12's go for them.

Well, I've been thinking about the subs more seriously and I think that it would be hard to find an amp to power the 3 sub combination. The Type X is a dual 4 ohm, so finding an amp to amp all 3 of them would be a challenge. I was thinking about either getting 3 amps or stacking two of them that are capable of handling the load. Either way, amping the 3 subs is going to be far more expensive.
@Red - You make a good point about the space issue. If I went with the 3 tens, then I would need to build a custom box to fit my trunk, but even then, I would be cutting it close. The reason I wanted to upgrade is because I'm not getting enough bass as it is. My components clearly overpower the subs at high volumes and the crappy 12" audiobahns that I have just don't have the kick that I need. I was thinking that the tens would have a sharper and snappier response.
Someone recommended that if I'm going for SQ, I should go with three 10" IDQ's instead of the Alpines. I haven't heard either, but both of their reputations hold that they are good subs.
@Greeny - I have yet to calculate the dimensions for the subs, but the box that I am using currently is a ported enclosure for two 12's. If the specs match up (which they most likely won't) then I'll use my box...otherwise I'll have to either build my own or have one made for the specs. The two twelves that I have right now aren't loud enough for my daily driver, but that could just be because they're audiobahns.

again, box
it's all about the box
maybe you should consider a different box design before you consider forking out the money for new subs.
honnestly, a well built, roperly designed box will do a lot for subs, even crappy subs

You're right, I should probably get a new box first, but knowing myself, I will end up upgrading my subs in the near future anyway, so I should probably build the box to the specs of the subs that I'm going to get. I see a lot of sub boxes on ebay that say they are designed specifically for the Alpine Type X's, but I'm not sure if I trust ebay quality.
I think I'm just going to go with two high quality 12's so that I will still be able to hit those extreme lows and get that deep bass (and also have enough space in my trunk). Have you heard of Image Dynamics IDMax 12's?

Ebay is not that bad....I seem to be addicted to it...lol. I think that everything that I've got for my car so far has been through ebay, including rims, carputer parts, interior lighting, exterior mods, speakers, amps, subs, home theater audio, tools, etc.
I think that I've had good luck with sellers generally because I've heard many horror stories of how people didn't get what they paid for or that the product was damaged in some way. I like to buy from ebay stores that have a good reputation, but then again, i guess its only a matter of time before i have a bad experience.
It's just very convenient to use paypal once you have it all set up. It's just a one button click to order stuff instead of having to enter all of your information and search different websites. That's also a bad thing because I've bought a lot of things off impulse because they seemed like good deals (my audiobahns). They make it easy to spend/waste money....but then again I've sold tons of things on ebay as well.

I went to a local shop that sadly closed down now, and listened to there SPL setup
burps at like 161-162.5 dB, i only stood it for liek 10 seconds and i was liek PLZ turn that off. I went back to the truck and i asked my mom if she felt that in the truck(btw the exhaust isnt connected so its loud) shes like, HOLLY HELL YEA lol...she said teh buiulding was shakin, i was also in tears.

Well...I don't think that I would ever accomplish a system that hits 160+ or even 150+ for that matter, but all I know is that my system could use a lot more bass...I'm sort of like bass-ophile in that sense. I want my subs to hit hard as hell, but just short of shattering any windows....and I want them to be able to reproduce the different low end frequencies accurately at the same time (but I know we can't always get what we want).

3ondubs...its hard as shiz to shatter windows. You need to match the resonance frequency...
also if you want to replace ur subs, just tell me wat sizes you want, how many u want, and ur budget and il show u a setup that will be loud as f and sound good

just wait till they try and foch you over, then admit that they made the mistakes twice, then still send credit collectors after you....even though THEY were the ones who made the mistakes, and even admitted it....then when it's 31 days after buying something from over seas (sometimes it takes longer than 30 days to get through customes etc) and you report fraud and they say you can't claim anything because it's longer than 30 days! I don't see them lasting much longer honnestly....just wait, you'll get screwed, everyone does.
