I just have mine sitting on my rear deck, under the rear window glass. If you live in major city, you'll be pleased to find out that XMDirect units also receive a terrestrial-based signal which suppliments the satellite-based signal. They basically never lose signal, even when inside a tunnel, in the garage, under an overpass, etc.

My suggestion is to try it where you want it first, and if you don't get good signal, only then go the on top/outside of the car route.

I have mine on the roof. You don't need to drill a hole for anything. Just mount it on the back of your roof about the rear window and run the wire underneath the weather-stripping around the window. Run it under the stripping down the side of the window, and then into your trunk. Once in your trunk, you can run it inside your car, and down along the runnerboards all the way up to the front of your car.
