yet you go ahead and waste your time and all of our time to post an answer that you're sure has already been posted....

Well we can all agree that this guy is a moron and obviously found out the hard way that his idea sucked.

Some practicle advice for people who dont want to spend tons of cash. My stock speakers were vaguely ok so I just bought a cheap 4 channel amp and a 2 channel amp + small sub off of ebay and I get reasonable 4.1 surround for about £100 which is about the price of a cruddy head unit here. Then at some point I can upgrade to components in the front and my system will be half decent.

Theres no need to spend loads of money but even something on the cheap is way better than a good set of computer speakers.

I'd think that the $50 POS car stereo package you get at WalMart would sound better that PC speakers in your car.

Personally I think computer speakers in the car are not a good idea.

The color doesn't match the interior of my car very well...

I agree Darque -

the CRAP (and I mean that in every sense of the word) at WalMart is honnestly worse than what you would find at your local flea market...lol

1. computer speakers come preloaded in enclosures. a lot of the time people underestimate the importance of a good enclosure, and logitech can design a great enclosure and make use of it in a hundred thousand speaker systems, the relative cost is small. a $30 speaker/amp combo in an enclosure that cost $10 to build (but was engineered by logitech at a cost in the tens of thousands to work perfectly with the speaker) will sound a hell of a lot better than a $40 speaker in a door, or even a homemade box.

2. cars have ****ty acoustics, compared to a room that a computer would be in.

Just to prolong this discussion some more, I'd like to respond to this comment about my previous comment.

The acoustics of ported and bandpass boxes was figured out quite some time ago. Any DIYer could take a cheap speaker and use a program to design the ultimate box for it. It doesn't cost $1000s of R&D. I'm sure if you did an Audit of Logitech you would see that their R&D people spend more time figuring out how they can lower their materials cost and make their product stand out on the shelves of best buy so they can make more money. Sure, they will spend a little bit of money to compare their product against competitors and maybe they'll spend a little more to make theirs sound better...as long as it doesn't hurt their bottom line. Car audio manufacturers of equivalently priced gear do the same thing (I'm not arguing that)...but their goal is to make things sound reasonable in a car, not your desk.

The acoustics of car interiors may suck...but it is perfect for bass. PC speaker systems use "subwoofers" to play down to 40Hz. car audio systems use subwoofers to play down to 20Hz. The average car speaker mounted in a door can play down to 50-60Hz no sweat because it uses the door as an enclosure...which is remarkably larger than a little box you put on the floor under your desk. So just because something comes with a subwoofer and a big plastic box don't think you are getting more for your money. In fact, a steel door is a much better enclosure than something molded out of thin plastic. You don't see car audio subboxes made out of plastic do you?

Car audio manufacturers work with the restrictions of their environment (bad acoustics between 120-800Hz, harsh weather conditions, etc) while pc audio manufaturers work with the restriction of theirs (small footprint for satelites and subwoofers as to not take up desk space, large room, etc). If you think you are getting more for your money by going with PC systems you are being extremely mislead. They both work out to be the same deal...for the environment they are designed for. If you take one and put it in another environment you are only cheating yourself.

*cough* q-logic *cough*

Sorry...plastic enclosures

Then again, mass marketed custom made enclosures, injection molding = cheapest way to do it. Just not practical to do a custom FG enclosure everytime...people won't pay for it.
