I can't believe this thread is still going on, I for one, would love to put my computer speakers inside a car.
I read on the first page, that some guy said computer speakers rarely go below 35hz-40hz.
Well the frequency response for my computer speakers is 20hz - 40khz ...........exactly! So why not?
They are beefy enough too. 700w........RMS!! each channel pumps out 70w RMS and there are 7 speakers. The sub alone pumps out 210w RMS
Put it this way, with all the windows and doors shut, at top volume, its putting out over 122.4db which can be heard down the street! Now I am sure that can compete at SPL competitions! Imagine this in a small car!!
In contrast, I am in the process of upgrading the stock speakers in my car with some decent ones. I am not looking for max power, the stock speakers are loud enough but clarity is an issue. All the speakers I have seen, from crappy no-name brands to real good brands like JL Audio, Pioneer, Alpine, Sony, infinity etc etc.
All the speakers I have seen have a frequency reponse from around 50hz to 20Khz with the "best" doing around 36khz. Now I am sure, there are audiophile speakers out there which can do better than 40khz, but you also have to factor in cost, My computer speakers were only ~$350
P.s Just for the record, I settled on some sony's, which produce 30hz-26khz. Yes, I do need a low bass response, because I am not planning on getting a subwoofer as it would take too much space in my trunk and would have to declare it to the insurance people
