I was just trying to help as I work in the industry...and you could say I have a little experience w/ home vs. car audio.
But please, go do it. It may very well sound great to you...a lot of audio is a complete personal preference.

Good post. NOW we know where you are coming from. I don’t think I understood before that you were trying to forgo the need for a car audio amplier(s).
#1 and #2 are certainly true and add some complications to the project.
#3 I don’t think I fully agree with. Yes, the car is a different environment but I don’t believe this invalidates the PC speaker.
I’ll add a #4 though. Are PC speakers made to get wet? No, they are not. Your car audio speakers are though. This still doesn’t make it impossible to do. After all, you can achieve anything if you spend enough energy on it. At what point does the effort become more than the achievement? (rhetorical) Speakers that mount in the door do get wet from rain water that slips past the rubber window strip. Just another complication. <shrug>
Edit: oh yeah. I feel the need to point out that your are not getting something for nothing. The $ you spend on PC speakers that need to be powered (because they have an amp in them) is the same $ you could spend on a car audio amplifier. Its not like one is more expensive than the other, they are just different. There is a wealth of cheap amps and car speakers just as there are a wealth of cheap pc speakers. You get what you pay for. My belief is that $ for $ the car audio setup would sound better due to not having to overcome the fact that a PC speaker is not made for the car audio task.

Make sure to carefully read the specs of the inverter that you plan on getting. 400W on the package doesn't necessairly mean that it can handle a 400W load....usually only 400W peak.

this reminds me of when I was 16 and I took my HUGE House speakers from my stereo in my room and threw them in the back seat of my camaro.. I was sadly suprised to find the sound to be well.. bland
I'll also say this, it doesnt sound like your much of an audiophile, why not just keep your stock speakers and just add an 4ch amp and a bass tube? that would cost a lot less than your $300 speaker set and still probably sound good enough for you and I can say with no doubt equally well or better than the pc speakers, plus there would be a lot lessinstallation. I run slightly amped (10 year old) stock speakers and most of my friends think they are aftermarket because it gets decently loud and is reasonably clear (I have crossovers).. Just another piece of idea for food for thought

he won't listen to reason, only what he wants to do....which is why we are patiently waiting to see if he tries it

If it plugs into a cigarette ligher in the car, then if you do the math, you will be let down. 15 amps (what most cigarette lighters are fused at) * 14.6 volts (about the max voltage you will have) = 219 watts. Now lets be nice and say 80% efficiency, that gives us 175.2 watts. So you bring up a good often overlooked point, their is no physical way to get what those cheap inverters say they can put out.
I had either a 300 or 400 watt inverter which plugs into the cigarette lighter (and just as described above, this is an impossible to achieve number), went to run my laptop, and it could not power my supply (I have a 135 watt power brick for my laptop). Now I know according to the above math, it looks like anything in the 60% or more efficiency range should easily drive this, but if you look at the input, it says 100-240v @ 1.5 amps. So using our 80% efficiency, you do the division of 175.2/110, and you see it only puts out 1.59 amps, which assumes 80% efficiency at 14.6 volts... So you can see how these inverters do not put out nearly what they are rated for, and you do not want to use even half of the rated power.

the guy simply hasn't been exposed to much in the real world
because quite honnestly, there's a LOT of car audio speakers that would STOMP computer speakers...Berylliums included

Noone mention that house speakers tend to have a higher resistance, whereas cars have nroamlly 4ohms or less.
and since when can car speakers get wet?

the enclosure is the whole reason they sound "good" for only $200

they are designed to handle the elements better, as in a little moisture here and there
while home and PC speakers generally can't to the same extent

Treated paper cone vs. straight paper cone. You get a non-treated paper cone wet...well...there'll be some problems.
You get a treated cone wet, water will generally just drip off.
Now, don't submerge either speaker...bad idea
