Power AMP from CarPC
Is anyone running one power feed to thier carPC and then powering touchscreen and amp from the carpc's psu ?
I know you can power a lilliput from the carps psu, but Im thinking my M1 psu may not have the juice to power a small amp.

Why do you want to? If its in a car, it will be 100 times better to power it straight from the battery.

Why would you want to? Amps suck a lot of juice. Way more than you would want to supply from a computer PS. Besides, they are made to work off unregulated power. They either have their own internal DC-DC PS or they are made to take however much voltage you supply. Because of this, many amps produce more than rated power since you are supplying 14.4 instead of 12V.

If your talking about powering your amp off a power supply:
wtf would you put a power supply on an amp when an amp already has a power supply?
If your talking about powering your amp off a regulator:
wtf would you put a regulator on an amp when an amp is designed to work in the car environment?

Maybe we misunderstand you, do you mean you want to power your amp off your PSU, or do you mean you want use your PSUs built in SDC to turn your amp on and off. The first one is ridiculous but the second is fairly easy.

Im talking about running the power from the battery, to the carpc and then running a line from the carpc to the amp. sounds straight forward to me, cept for the fact I may not have a big enough power supply in the carpc.
I thought i'd seen someones schematic of this being done somewhere but cant find it anymore.

I can see no point in doing that whatsoever. Just power your amp straight off the battery.

If powering a car audio amplifier off of a computer's power supply seems straight forward to you, than i'm sorry. At some point you have to stop and ask yourself, "What was i even thinking? From now on, i'm not going to think out loud".

We just don’t understand why you would want to. Amps have 3 wires for juice. +12V (always on), -12V (ground), +12 remote on/switched. The amp doesn’t turn on until it sees power on that third line.

Can't you feel the love here?
Question, why not put a terminal block where the carPC gets the power source from the battery and run one wire to your PSU and one to the AMP? It is basiclly a Y split but you're not powering your amp off the carPC you're just running one power source to the AMP. You will also need to run the ground and the remote wire too but you run one power line.

You can use the acc/ign line from the carpc psu to trigger the amp to turn on, but since the amp has it's own power supply, you'll do more damage (if possible) than good by trying to supply regulated power to an amp that is expecting unregulated, full blown battery power. Just fuse the 12v coming from the battery to the amp just like you would from the battery to the carpc psu.
