just got a reply from m-audio and they said that you can run the balanced outputs to an unbalaced source which will give it the 4v outputs from a soundcard.
i also talked to some people about creative's prosumer line 'emu' and they said that the emu's were a hard product to beat except for one ore two things that pertained to audio recording...i forgot what they were though :-)
so red you should look at those because they do have pcmcia (if memory serves me right) and they probably have 4v balanced outputs. now we can take advantage of the software eq'ing... onto that research now.

for those of you following this thread, i'd like to link another thread that kingeorge36 just started, sounds promising:
http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/car-audio/72919-directdvd-6-hd-possible-car-eq.html

If this was true this would be a cost effective eq for anyone's carputer. Not to mention a very versitile picece of software as well because it play any type of the common media (DVDs or CDs) and still give you the 31 band EQ for each speaker as well.
Here's link to the info:

Well, Its been established that M-audio is a good company but I'll just add my 2 cents in. My wife used to work for a music software company and exclusively used M-audio equipment. I was VERY impressed with it and would recommend it to anyone.
I know I was amazingly shocked when I hooked up my digifire 7.1 card to my system. It sounds great even without a signal booster.
I have also looked as the PAS equalizer studio. Its some serious stuff. It has a 31 band eq just for the low frequencies. You can also hook in a mic and have the program automatically adjust your system to a curve you set or what it deems "right." I personally appreciate how an artist wants their music to sound and listen to it that way. There is a free trial so you can give it a shot. http://www.pas-products.com/

Maybe one of those would be suitable for replacing a standalone processor. I imagine the drivers for these might have the features you're looking for?
Also, doesn't the 3rd party Soundblaster driver set have things like this? I can't remember what they're called, but they have a lot of features aimed at high-end audio, and from memory use ASIO as well.

i think you're talking about kxproject. i'm not sure though, havent checked into that in a while. the catch to the kxproject drivers is that it will only work with pci-based sb cards.

not sure if you're purely looking for a software eq or a HW/SW combo..
I do a bit of pro audio, and i absolutely love my Sabine Graphiq.
2 channel, 1/3 octave, compressor, limiter etc...
the only things on thr front pannel is a serial port 5 LED's and power button..
also has dry contact inputs for memory recals..
all curves /adjustments are done via serial port and the software..
http://www.sabine.com/GraphiQ2/GRQ2-main.htm
i use the GRQ-3122S..
and no it's not cheap..
approx 1200.
but worth every penny..

I havent' read far enough, but my Creative MP3+ has RCA outs only...and then one headphone jack. Still has potical though...i beleive it has spidif, but i doubt it
and didn't i start a thread similar to this with a piece of software that i found and no one replied to:P.

hey red, i think some of the firewire m-audio cards have balanced 4 volt 1/4" trs (tip/ring/sleeve )outs. you could make a custom cable to make an unbalanced rca. each trs out is it's own channel (unlike the mini plugs on most soundcards that cary two chans)

This card doesn't do what I need it to. It only has a set of RCA outs I believe. This was the first response to my post about a 'high quality' sound card in the hardware forum. I responded to that guy as well.

That m-audio card i purchased only has 2 sets of balanced outputs. Looks like i'll be going with the e-emu 1820 card

M-Audio balanced? outputs
I learned something when talking to m-audio the other day. I have an m-audio mobilepre usb external soundcard that has two 1/4" output jacks. I assumed these were balanced jacks, but they told me they were not. I'm definitely not an expert on this stuff, but it was still surprising to me. I guess the morale is don't assume that all 1/4" outputs are balanced.
