well...i'm doing a lot more research again. i have to make sure that i can get a software x-over as well, since my amps dont have x-overs. UGH.... i have a ton of emails going out. I may just end up keeping the alpine and going unbalanced into the amps (i would hack up the face plate so i could hide everthing but the volume knob)....id rather avoid this though.
anyways, quack, i may have an m-audio soundcard for sale...it has balanced 4 volt outs :-) you can make a cable to convert it to unbalanced 4 volts for your amps if needed.

man - if we had the means and the money, we should design a high quality all in one solution to this problem!

an all in one solution would be a double din head unit that is a pc designed especially for cars. It's sound card would be equivalent to a H701 and it would have rca outs that go to the amps. The sound card would be like an equalizer and there would be a remote to control those settings and to tune the sub level. There would be a slot load dvd-rw drive and four usb ports on the front...this would be an all in one solution.

doesn't sound too hard. Get an P3 1ghz sbc, an MP3+, a USB hub, a griffen power mate (to control the levels on everything and cycle through) and LCD form a nite-max (to be the interface), and a programmer and you got yourself a maybe a 1-1.5 din solution with a software based eq.

All of the ideas that i presented have been done already. Many people are currently using double din computers, but the part that's missing is the H701 audio equivalence factor. The computer needs to be designed as a head unit with a remote that has sound menu options that pop up over windows (much as a monitor's options menu would pop up over whatever is in the background). The RCA's should have at least 4V with an optional optical out. The carputer should also have it's power supply integrated much as a standard headunit so that standardized connections can be used when replacing a stock headunit. The computer should be developed to ensure instantaneous boot times and the front end should be linked to the sound card controllability.
Those are my requirements...now develop!....lol

Interesting links
I noticed most of the software EQ options are plug-ins...usually compliant with a standard called VST (Virtual Studio Technology). Sorry if this is common knowledge...it wasn't for me so I did a little research. Here are a few links of interest:
- Wikipedia page on VST - explains a lot
- Audacity - an open source VST host capable of accepting a plug-in
- Muse Research's Receptor - a piece of hardware that accepts VST plug-ins. Thought this was interesting because it shows that people are trying to do the exact opposite of us...process the sound off the computer. Might be controllable from the PC and would take on all the processing load.
