yeup - sure do!

becausse of the different speaker placements in respect to the listener. There's also the fact that each channel on an amplifier (unless we're talking about an EXTREMELY high end amplifier, and even still) doesn't put out 100% the same signal. then you also have to consider that even on the highest end speakers, two of the same speaker aren't going to be 100% the same either. (this is getting into the Expert level stuff of taking appart multi thousand dollar speakers, weighing the cone mass, adding and removing mass in strategic areas, etc)

Hey.

I just wanted to add a great link to this thread. Didn't have time to read it all. Hope I am not reposting a link. www.diyaudio.com is a great site, if you look away from the gainclone lovers and snake oil representatives.

:-)

Absolutely amazing. This is exactly what I've been looking for: a solution that uses CPU power to blow away any car audio hardware component on the market. This guy has all the pieces...and that sound card with the expansion modules would let me run 4-way active right off the PC. Of course, it sounds like it has to be one hefty CPU with tons of RAM.

Another link to a guy that shows you how to measure and tweak the frequency response in a car.

Happy to help.

I realize this thread has been beat to death and I honestly didn't read much of it... but I'd like to toss in my chips anyways.

It seems it would be possible, with a powerful enough PC with a nice enough soundcard and fancy software. But it sucks too much CPU to use it while watching video. You can always put a second PC in the car, but that just doesn't seem right. What if we could figure out a way to use an existing DSP but CONTROL it from the PC?

the Alpine and other processors all come with a controller, or can be controlled from certain high end head units. What if we could use the PC as the controller, like we do with the XM tuners? What if we could devise a USB --> H701 cable? Wouldn't that be the holy grail?

Then we'd have a dedicated device that takes our digital signal and processes it into seperate analogue outs, all controlled by a simple touchscreen app. Now all we need is for Alpine to fill us in on the communication protocol

This was the EQ I was looking at. I couldn't figure out if it could be configured to be multichannel or if the EQ settings effected all channels equally. Any ideas? I've been way sidetracked and haven't taken the time to follow up with the company yet...figured somebody on here would know.

Hmmm I had another idea. I used to dabble around in producing techno music quite a bit. I mostly used a program called propellerheads reason. Its an amazingly fun program to work with, extremely visual, sounds great, and can be had for free at the usual places.

I don't see any reason why you couldnt use it in real-time, I dont recall it using that much CPU unless you had a zillion devices going.

It basically gives you a big virtual pro-audio producing rack, which starts as an audio output device, where you basically have a reproduction of your soundcard. You can flip the rack around to wire it up however you like.

for example you can take a stereo source, and use the 'splitter' device to split it into 4 or 5 signals. you can run each signal to its own EQ, and filter it in every way imaginable. You can run them through individual delay devices, or other effects devices. then you can run each output to individual channels on your soundcard.

i would imagine that by using this software or Cubase, or Logic, which are both even more professional (but less intuitive) competitors, you could get just the result we're looking for.
