Opinions...Pioneer shallow mount subs

I just came across the Pioneer shallow-mount subs in another thread. The 12" Premier model only requires 3.25" of mounting depth!! Also requires only 0.5-1.0 cu ft of enclosure volume.

Since I travel a lot and need my trunk space, there's only one shallow area where I can mount a sub. I was about to glass two JL 6W0's into this area. Anybody have any direct experience with these? Please don't just say "it's a 12 so it's going to sound better than two 6's"...I've heard a wide range of subs over the years from small to large, top-end to awful. I love the 6W0's, but I would like to have a bit more extension. I'm looking for opinions from direct experience with these...especially in regard to SQ (high SPL's aren't my goal). Thanks.

Good thing you are not interested in SPL because these subs don't hit very hard. Pioneers idea for these was meant for a truck setup where space was an issue, i have installed many of these subs at my store in trucks and they sound pretty decent, but i would be a little skeptikal on how they would sound in a car.

check out the image dynamics id12's they aren't that shallow but they are pretty shallow and require a small enclosre as well (i think about the same as that pioneer. i have one and i love it. hits great.

also elemental designs have some cool 6" midbass drivers on sale that were designed specifically for what you situation is.

canadapettit: Thanks for the info. Sounds like you have some experience with the pioneer and other subs on the market. Can you compare it to a JL 12W0 in terms of extension and SPL? If the extension is about the same and its just the SPL that suffers, I can probably live with it.

scott_fx: Thanks for the recommendations. Unfortunately, the 3 ID lines of subs are all 5.75" mounting depth at a minimum. ID makes great stuff, but the extra 2.5" of mounting depth (compared to the pioneer) is going to be a deal-killer. The problem is that it would cramp the fit of my golf clubs in the trunk. Since that's my job, the clubs take priority.

I took a look at the ed midbasses and they seem like good drivers. I would guess they're pretty similar to the JL 6W0. Unfortunately, I couldn't find Thiele-Small parameters for the ed drivers to compare to the 6W0. It would have to blow away the 6W0 for me to replace a 6" driver with another 6".

Sedan. No rear speakers, so bass passes trhrough the empty rear deck better than normal.

Keep in mind that shallow subs usually are built with a weighted cone. They require more power then conventional subs to get equivalent output. Nothing wrong with them... but you may want to look into an epicenter from audiocontrol
